I am impressed by how lightweight #XMPP is. Most of time, I am not able to open even simple websites on my mobile data while in underground #Delhi metro, but XMPP messages go through immediately.
On a related note, I remember having internet issues in my previous phone a couple of years ago after switching to Lineage OS. Matrix, websites etc. didn't use to work. But XMPP messages used to go through fine.

We are seeing a nice uptick in Brazilian #fediverse instances enabling #xmpp for their members. They even gave it a funny new nickname: #Xampu (Shampoo in English, but it kinda sounds like you could pronounce XMPP in Brazilian Portuguese).
Anyone who used both Dino and Psi(+), how the first one compares to the second? 🤔

I was hoping to release a more complete version as 1.0, but that's taking a while, and people are already starting to use it as it is (especially with the impending shuttering of #WhatsApp on KaiOS) so I decided to get this out right away 📦

Gajim is currently migrating from GTK3 to GTK4. 🔧 GTK is Gajim's user interface toolkit. It provides building blocks, like windows, buttons and labels. 🧩
Version 4 of this toolkit brings performance improvements to Gajim, e.g. faster rendering of user interface elements. 💨
Additionally, switching to GTK4 allows Gajim to use newer widgets, like nice drop downs.

Kaidan 0.10.1 was released. This version brings media sharing and new message marker fixes.

Only, don't replace one WhatsApp with another.
#Signal and #Threema are centralized services, and just as vulnerable to #enshittification as Twitter or WA.
Instead, use a platform that's standardized and federated - #XMPP, a.k.a. #Jabber.
The easiest way to use it is to install #Quicksy from the Play Store, App Store, or F-Droid.

This weeks #Fedibruary topic was an #XMPP / #Jabber server and following a suggestion here on masto (thanks @erebion !) I installed Prosody .
In a move which probably made my life harder overall, I decided to install within our network and not on a public server. This is a problem because XMPP servers push mail to each other like SMTP... which I should have remembered before hand....
Anyway, I did successfully set up #Prosody and did some experiments, messaging to my #xmpp.social account and a second account I had created on the private server.
Because (i believe) of split dns issues i was having the users on my private server can't share media or files . I hope that would be a matter of correctly configuring dns and the issue might go away.
I'd have liked to have done a better job of this one but I think this is a valid proof of concept and I will be storing my notes ("documentation") away for a future live deployment.

If one has enough experience to create an email account, one has enough to create an XMPP account too. For everyone else the solution is education, not SMS.
Works for other services too.
On my recent #Lufthansa flight, I noticed their free messaging plan on FlyNet Wi-Fi allows #XMPP traffic (likely via port 5223), but HTTP uploads were blocked. So, I added a new feature to #Conversations_im that lets users retry failed uploads via Jingle P2P file transfer, which will fall back to IBB if needed. Can’t wait to test it on the return flight! ✈️

So installed prosody on my small personal instance and finally run my own #XMPP server. This was surprisingly simple and seems pretty lightweight . Well I don’t know if I did it right 😅 but it seems to work.
