I hate using Word for any sort of creative writing. I wrote a short story in Obsidian then put it in Word because that's one of the accepted formats for the place to which I might like to submit it.

Instantly dozens of blue underlines, exactly two of which are simple spelling errors. The rest are all style suggestions which, while they would not fundamentally change the thing I wrote, would rob me of my unique voice.

This isn't even AI slop. It's just the helpful little suggestions like verb tense and comma usage which I had already carefully considered. It's also straight up wrong 3/4 of the time. In a few cases, it wants to change the wording entirely.

I used to write like this. I used to use Word all the time. How much of my voice was lost to blue and red squiggly underlines?

I know I can go turn all those features off if I really wanted to, but I'd rather they be opt-in, just like I'd rather any genAI features be opt-in. The point is, even before genAI, Word was already tailoring and softening everybody's individuality toward a perceived ideal.

Did anyone else try out the Apple Voice Technology offered for free by Draft2Digital to produce audiobooks? I was amazed at how terrible and primitive the Apple Voice Technology actually is, considering what Apple is. Here's one clue about how terrible the technology is: I wrote a book in 2023 under the pen name N.J. Edwards. The computer-generated male voice introduced the audiobook this way: "This is an audiobook by author New Jersey Edwards. Granted, New Jersey Edwards is a fantastic pen name. I wish I'd thought of it. But that is not the author's name on the front of my book. The audiobook of my novel BEER POUR is so atrocious that there's actual computer code jibberish spoken in the middle of a dialogue scene. I could go on and on about all the flaws, but there's not enough room here. Last month, some authors were concerned at the news that Amazon would start to allow ebook buyers to download ebooks in ePub or PDF format if DRM was not enabled. Some authors that hadn't used DRM in the past considered enabling it to prevent these downloads.

The feature was rolled out recently, so I tried downloading three books (one of mine, and two traditionally published books) that don't have DRM.

When looking at my purchased books in the digital content area, some books had a "Download available in additional formats" note in the listing, and they had a "Download EPUB/PDF" option under "More actions".

On the books that I tried, clicking that option downloaded a zip file with a 72-character long file name starting "ebook-content." and a .zip extension. Examining the zip file, it's an ePub with a .zip extension. So changing the extension from .zip to .epub allows me to view it in an ebook reader.

No sign of a PDF in any of these cases.

I'm not impressed at how Amazon have implemented this change, but I still see no reason to enable DRM on any of my books.
