Up, and up, and up -- the ancient steps of Ostuni, the hilltop city in Apulia, Italy, aren't steep, but they are relentless.

But as neither my wife nor I was in the mood to imitate Rocky Balboa and run up the steps, we enjoyed a gentle hike past cacti and cats, all of us appreciating any shade from the Mediterranean sun.

Normally, when we drive through country landscapes, we're looking at the landscape -- the cows and farmhouses, rolling hills and copses of trees.
