Drove down Highway 1 from Half Moon Bay, California to meet a Mastodon friend in Davenport. It was socked in fog at home, but about 14 miles north of Davenport the fog cleared — and I don't know if I've ever seen the ocean a more stunning shade of blue.

And it was lovely to meet my Mastodon friend in person!

Lake Superior gave me one last perfect scene before I head home to Virginia tomorrow. The Marquette shoreline, the clear water, and those magnificent clouds — I’m going to miss views like this.

Good afternoon from Kitch‑Iti‑Kipi, the Ojibwa “Big Spring” in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Michigan’s largest natural freshwater spring sends more than 10,000 gallons a minute surging up through limestone cracks. The water holds steady around 45°F/7°C year‑round, so even in brutal UP winters it almost never freezes. I’d love to see it in mid‑winter when the cold air meets that warm, clear water.

Happy #SofaSunday! It’s another cool morning (61F / 16C). Warmer weather arrives tomorrow, so summer will be making a return.

This week will be busy with out-of-town family visiting by Wednesday, but today I’m going to just enjoy the day. There’s time enough for cooking and cleaning prep tomorrow.

Our hibiscus is starting to bloom. As always, it is worth the wait.

May 22 is International Sherlock Holmes Day — the birthday of Arthur Conan Doyle, the man who created the world’s most famous detective.

Holmes was inspired by Dr. Joseph Bell, a real physician who could read a patient’s profession, habits, and character from tiny details: a walk, an accent, worn sleeves, mud on shoes.

Doyle later tried to kill Holmes at Reichenbach Falls… but readers refused to let him go.
