Whenever I am driving to or from Michiganโs Upper Peninsula, itโs mandatory for me to go to one (sometimes both!) of the bridge view parks. On our way south today, I stopped at the park near Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse in the Lower Peninsula.
Home from the farmers market, and I fear we're getting to the end of dahlia season. There were still some lovely ones today, though โ just less selection.

Well...good morning everyone! Had a good day yesterday but had to go back to compression socks with my right foot pretty swollen from the heat and standing a lot all day...slept okay last night and need to get on the bike here right now but there is no urgency today with just the rides and grilling to do today...going to try out the 100spf sunscreen I got yesterday and I hope it keeps me from being scorched on the bike..it did rain here yesterday for about an hour and I'll take it...

It's like the opposite of designing an escape room and a lot less fun. Downsizing someone is hard enough. When they have dementia, it's even harder because you have to recreate their environs in a way that will make sense to them. Everything that goes in has to be strategic.
It took a couple of weeks of planning to execute my mother-in-law's move to a locked memory care facility. We trickled her stuff out slowly to minimize the shock. Yesterday, my wife took her to our house for the day while I did an all day sprint to complete the move. She left a large apartment and returned to a mini version carefully assembled to feel similar to her old one.
At the end of that marathon day, all I could think of was that whomever wrote "Who moved my Cheese" perfected the art of monetizing the fortune of having an easy life.
I never touched that book so I can't say if my ire is founded or not, but yesterday I randomly found myself irate at the influencer types that I once regarded as wise in early adulthood.

This is my childhood friend Kevin's "Big Stick" emblem. He had* severe hemophilia and the Big Stick is a rite of passage that he's taken part in for over 20 years at an activity camp for kids with hemophilia.
Hemophilia is a bleeding disorder where your body doesn't make enough clotting factor to stop bleeds. This means that there is no such thing as a minor injury. It's not just cuts and scrapes. You pull a muscle? There's bleeding that has to be controlled.
Hemophiliacs have to administer clotting factor from an IV to stop bleeds. At this camp, the kids will reach an important rite of passage. They learn a crucial skill they'll need to become independent. The kids will self infuse their own IV for the first time.
Kevin's at the camp for work reasons, but he's also volunteering to give back. He hand carves every child their own custom stick trophy to award to them after they've taken a needle and made their "big stick".
*-He still has hemophilia, but cutting edge therapies improved it.
