"The True North is indeed strong and free," said King Charles in his throne speech at the opening of the Canadian parliament today. This was only the third time in Canada's history a monarch has delivered the address, which is usually given by the governor general. Charles was there at the request of Prime Minister of Mark Carney and referenced Canada's unique identity and a renewal of "national pride, unity and hope" in a speech that underlined the country's sovereignty in the face of U.S. President Trump's "51st state" threats.
