A gigantic, spreading tree. Its massive trunk is about 20 feet tall before spreading into gigantic, near horizontal branches. Descending from the branches and surrounding the trunk are hundreds of vine-like aerial roots.

We've spotted this cute Barred Owlet standing tall, showing off her legs high up in the moss-covered trees, as s/he perched on a thin branch, being vigilant and poised, one of her wings stretched out. Such a character it looked like having wool leggings on, made me smile.
It was not easy to notice this little fledgling, her feathers blended in with the natural environment so much, providing camouflage among the dense, Pacific Northwest forest setting at Beaver Lake Park, Washington state in May 2024.

In the forest, the stump of what was once a giant old-growth tree still stands over two meters high and probably 1.5 meters diameter. A plump pillow of fluffy moss sits across its cut top end, and a mix of moss and lichen paints its sides.

For #ThickTrunkTuesday I wanted to share this picture of this old and twisted #LiveOak Tree I saw yesterday at the Audubon Zoo in #NewOrleans #Louisiana. In spite of its gnarly appearance, this tree is well cared for, and even has a lightning arrestor system installed on it that grounds it to the earth using metal wires. Never saw that before on a tree…

This past weekend I met up with @morgancarmont to go explore the forests of #VancouverIsland. To say we had an epic weekend would be an understatement.

Amongst our many adventures, we found a new #oldgrowthforest to explore and I had to take a photo in front of one - the size of them is just incomprehensible otherwise. For reference, I am over 187cm tall. This single Big Leaf Maple is easily 10m diameter at its base.
