@lisamelton It should be illegal for companies like #Synology to "upgrade" software running on YOUR DEVICE to remove features you bought WITH the hardware (#HEVC and #VideoStation)!
wrt:Synology 7.2.2
DSM upgraded to 7.2.2 and moved all video decoding from server side to client side…
Weirdly one of my cameras stopped working after the upgrade. They are both from Reolink and use H.265. The backyard one stopped connecting. Weird.
It still works in Reolink app. But I couldn’t log in the camera portal on my browser.
Forced reboot in the app and everything worked again 😬
Must be my day for software misbehaving, now #Synology's admin UI has stopped working in Firefox after a minor DSM update 😩
)。

On another front, I have been unsatisfied about how poor Synology Photos is at indexing and using ML to search photos. Backup and syncing is fine, but the search is very weak. So I did some research on #Immich, which seems to be a very solid and much better alternative.
However my #NAS as it is only has 4GB of RAM, and the usage is already around 70-75% anytime of the day. So I either need to upgrade the #RAM, or add a dedicated computing device to run Immich on (storage will still be on the NAS).
And holy cow the rabbit hole of used server / computer / parts is so fun to dig in. I was thinking about a 1U rack server, but the fan noise was just too much. I watched a few YouTube videos and it sounds like a jet engine... So small form then... I honestly don't know what hardware I should get for Immich and maybe I'd add more service to it... so I haven't bought anything. I did find some used ECC SODIMM RAMs on eBay which I ordered.
I'll upgrade the RAM and see how it goes to have Immich run on the NAS.
BTW the #Synology branded ECC SODIMM 4GB is listed for over $600+...... I'm really not liking Synology as a company now.
Question to the home lab and self hosted communities: what's the go-to cloud backup service these days? I've been using Backblaze, but there have been some controversies about their future. Are those irrelevant?
Additional context: I need to run backups both from Linux (doesn't matter the tool) and Synology (their native backup tool).
TIA (thanks in advance)
