Golden sunlight bathes a serene beach, with gentle waves lapping at the shore under a dramatic sky. People stroll along the sand, enjoying the tranquil evening atmosphere.

Some of my favorite ways to daydream about the beach are remembering early morning wave-watching with a cup of coffee in my hands and my bare toes in the still-cool sand. Another is sitting under an umbrella on a sunny day with a good book in my lap. But one of the best is an evening stroll, watching the way the light lights up the sky.

An expanse of water and sand. The low tide has left sandy mudflats with rippling patterns and spiderwebs of little rivers receding into the water. The orange sunset reflects off the wet surfaces, making it look like an alien landscape, bathed in orange light.

Silhouetted Cypresses

Shooting sunsets along the Northern California Coast can be a real challenge. Many times the low lying fog covers up the sun. This is more likely to happen during the warm summer months when you would like to spend time at the ocean. I caught this during the late spring. Captured along the California Coast near Monterey.

I captured this image along the California Coast just south of Monterey.
The foreground consists of some coastal cypress trees. The trees are black. The branches of the trees reach out in wind blown angles.
The backdrop is a California sunset. The brightest portion of the sun is mostly blocked by some of the tree branches. From that bright spot outwards the sky turns yellow, then orange and finally a brilliant red as the low clouds make their way onto the coast.
