Folsom and 16th, under the watchful eyes of Yolanda López.

A faded, monochrome picture of a street that runs through the heart of the Mission. Taken from the center of Folsom, looking south through a car windshield, while heading back from the gym a few hours before the rain.

This is an ordinary scene in this crowded San Francisco neighborhood, but for the giant portrait of a woman with a no-nonsense expression surveying all activity on the street below her.

The woman is Yolanda López (1942–2021), a community leader, artist, activist, educator, film producer, printmaker, and Chicano studies scholar. Yolanda lived in the Mission until her passing. Shortly before her death, a multistory mural portrait was added the the side of a tall building at 16th and Folsom. Per the artists, the mural expresses Yolanda's enthusiasm for the Black Panthers and references Yolanda's work producing the Basta Ya! ("enough already") newspaper.

A color photo taken upwards towards two buildings in the city. The building on the right is taller and a much older brick and stone façade whereas the building on the right is a shorter very modern white building with a strip of dark windows going down one side and a few other rectangular windows. But, in between those two buildings is a small ledge (under which there is a smaller building that can't be seen). It is a black balustrade and sitting on it is a spring tree in bloom with very bright pink flowers. The pink stands out strongly against the more bleak looking buildings.

oh hell yes: i've got css grid-lanes on my photo blog. much more performant and stable than js masonry.

only safari 26.4+ supports it, but hopefully other browsers will soon. (bad news: you need liquid glass to see it. good news: it's out of beta 🎉)

i've implemented it as a chain of progressive enhancement:
1. traditional css grid
2. js masonry for css grid
3. css grid-lanes
