I've just published version 2.86 of #snac, the simple, minimalistic #ActivityPub instance server written in C. Once again, most of the work has been done by fellow developers because they are the best. It includes the following changes:

Truncate RSS titles at UTF-8 character boundaries (contributed by lxo).

Link contacts to single-user people pages. Also, user's posts are shown (contributed by lxo).

Added emoji reactions (contributed by violette).

Mastodon API: Fix for some client notifications (contributed by violette), fix for a status visibility error (contributed by fruye).

If the query variable terse of a public post page is set to anything, no header is shown.

Fixed search failures when the query string has any leading blank.

Just testing #dillo from my #snac instance and It is good but some things don't work as expected. For instance if I get a notification and then like it. The button does not change to unlike until I reload the page. Also my hacky back to the top of page links that work in other browsers do nothing in dillo. They are basically as below.

I also noticed that all the admin tabs at the top of the snac admin page are all open taking up screen real estate.
I'm not complaining merely poiting out some of my findings and there is probably good reason that I don't know about why these work they way they do.

Hmmm I see #Snac latest git shows quoted posts. Would some kind person quote this post so I can see ?

Everything seem to be working fine on this self hosted instance so far but missing these (probably deliberately):

Cannot see number of followers/followed
No global timeline

I am using #snac a lightweight ActivityPub server written in C. It's really light and I am loving it so far. :)
I cannot afford to self host #Mastodon or similar which are resource hogs.

Hi, everyone. I've just published version 2.87 of #snac, the simple, minimalistic #ActivityPub instance server written in C. It only includes a single change, to avoid using EmojiReacts to harass users:

Hide EmojiReacts from muted actors and blocked instances.

Sorry for the inconvenience. Bad people creativity always gets me off-guard. Upgrade your snac to this version ASAP, or revert to 2.85.

There will be another release pretty soon with a better solution to delete offending EmojiReacts.

Snac2 is an excellent software solution for accessing the Fediverse. It is lightweight, very easy to compile and install, has minimal dependencies, and the development is progressing along a clear, clean, and logical path - thank you, @grunfink

Since last December, BSD Cafe has had, among its services, a snac instance - https://snac.bsd.cafe - which has been used sparingly, mainly by some for testing purposes. I’ve kept it as a 'testing' option.

In light of the interest it is generating (we now have stable users) and given that development is evolving to allow for both inbound and outbound movement, I have decided to designate it as a stable solution for accessing the Fediverse and to consider it a primary service of the BSD Cafe.

It has always received the utmost attention, I have consistently updated it promptly, and it has always been accessible, but I have also modified all the descriptions to clarify that it is a stable and definitive solution.

Question for folk that use #OpenBSD in their home labs or rather several. ;)

I've got this idea to spin up OpenBSD on an i5-10505 based PC with 32Gb ram and I want to run the following services which are currently hosted on my FreeBSD server here using Bastille jails for each service.

I have a reverse proxy, nginx for web, git and cgit in another, Syncthing, Radicale. So 5 jails in total. The questions I have are would you try run all of those on base OpenBSD or use vmm for each like I do with bastille ?
Also how would #Snac perform in a vmm virtual machine using only 1 CPU compared to being in a multi core CPU jail on FreeBSD ??

The FreeBSD server has a i7-4790 (8) @ 3.60 GHz with 16Gb ram
The OpenBSD machine has a i5-10505 (6) @ 3.2 - 4.6 GHz with 32Gb ram.

Don't ask me why I'm considering this please. #RunBSD

Um recurso excelente que acho que é exclusivo do #SNAC é "Ocultar esta publicação e suas respostas", muito útil para quando percebe que há ou que está surgindo um fio que não faz questão de ver. Não precisa silenciar a pessoa ou bolar um filtro de conteúdo. Basta um clique. Vida que segue. :thinkSmart:

By the way: Snac has themes. If you don't like them, build your own 🙂
And Snac runs smoothly with various web clients (e.g. Elk, Semaphore, Phanpy) and, of course, with pretty much every mobile client.

Será que alguém consegue convencer o John #Mastodon, que, aliás, também aguarda por Markdown, a fazer isso logo?

Só permanece faltando, na interface Web , bolar alguma maneira de facilitar a seleção de emoji sem depender de JavaScript — SNAC é isento disso. Por enquanto, é necessário decorar os códigos. Precariamente, tento manter os emojis personalizados num rascunho, para consultar.

@grunfink Which web client works well with #snac software?

So I've been running my own #Snac instance for the past week and I have to say that I'm actually loving it. It hardly takes up any resources and the inbuilt web interface is easily configurable with nothing more than #CSS .
There are some things that folk used to running #Mastodon might not like. For example it does not show any follower or following numbers to any instances. So people using Mastodon will see 0 followers and 0 following even though those Snac uses may have 100's of followers .
You do get a people tab on the snac interface that is just a list divided into people following you and people you follow but no numbers. This is an intentional design feature by the author @grunfink who stated.

I haven't implemented a simple count of following / followers on purpose; I consider all metrics in network media inherently toxic, because it's a way of comparing the relative success of people. This is also why, as seen from other Fediverse implementations, snac accounts always report 0 / 0 connections.

Also not all features work with android / iOS apps but most of the essentials do. I occasionally use #Tusky when I'm not just using the web interface for Snac which I just find easier. I think I will be staying with this fantastic lightweight piece of software and look forward to see what new features get added in the future. A wish would be to have a way of importing followers from Mastodon to Snac, which I think the dev is working on at the moment. Oh and I nearly forgot to say that you can import the CSV file of people that you are following through the command line and it's fairly simple to do too. I'd 100% recommended giving Snac a try if you're looking for a no nonsene lightweight #Fediverse instance.
