Lately I'm having issues with #Signal. Messages are delivered up to 2 hours later. It looks like it happens more often on mobile networks compared to WiFi, but delays are experienced on the latter too.
What would be a valid IM app alternative? No 🇺🇸 products preferably.

Sudden realization that #Signal and #Tailscale are, at a really high level and if you have really bad eyesight, essentially "the same thing”.
Per recent boost about how Signal is largely just key exchange and contact lookup. What else is largely "just” moderating key exchange plus a bunch of endpoint client work?? Exactly!
For the hard of reading: this is 50-75% joke.
For my White Town band chat, I'm thinking of bunging #phpBB up on my own webspace. At the minute we have a #WhatsApp group but obviously that's yet another Meta product. I think running a lil forum just for the six people in the band will be cool!

I've seen a lot of people talking about leaving #WhatsApp. Great!
Only, don't replace one WhatsApp with another.
#Signal and #Threema are centralized services, and just as vulnerable to #enshittification as Twitter or WA.
Instead, use a platform that's standardized and federated - #XMPP, a.k.a. #Jabber.
The easiest way to use it is to install #Quicksy from the Play Store, App Store, or F-Droid.

#PSA: I deleted all the #Meta/ #Facebook apps. Have you tried #Signal? It is co-founded and initially funded by Brian Acton, a co-founder of #WhatsApp. [1] Signal is better than WhatsApp in every possible way. @signalapp also has impermanent usernames for when you don't want to give out your number. Does audio/video/group chats as well.

We are basically doing what #signal and in particular moxie refused to do or declares impossible: federation.
Both #email and #activitypub ecosystems are all about federation.
However, #deltachat is vertically centralized in that all UIs use the same #rust core which implements all networking, encryption, chat/group/message logic in a single centralized place. The now 40+ #chatmail mail relay network is driven from centralized code.
At each level replication and federation is built in.
