I've finished: Winter Tide by Ruthanna Emrys

I was not aware of Ruthanna Emrys's The Litany of Earth novelette that preceded Winter Tide, and know Lovecraft only from other works he inspired.. So I read this novel without much background.

What I got was a mature protagonist, from a community designated as an enemy of the united states, trying to save the remnants of her culture as the red scare threatens to place them on the domestic enemy list yet again.

She has some remaining family both biological and adopted and gathers a number of allies to assist her, but she has to deal with allot of bullshit from allot of privileged pricks.

Quite often she ends up as the only adult in the room.

The magic system has allot of depth and a long history as elder gods / aliens are at it's heart.

Kimuli translates to flower, a thing that is supposed to be beautiful. A symbol of love and cuteness. But since I have an evil mind, I thought of a man turning into a flower monster, and haunting his wife. At least I stayed away from gore, so perhaps there's still some cuteness.

A murder mystery fantasy novel - why is this a first for me?! Fairly standard whodunnit which escalates to political intrigue, made distinctive by very cool world-building: an empire built to defend against leviathans attacking from the sea, whose bodily fluids enable a raft of fantastical bio-enhancements. Interesting characters and the potential for more fleshing out give the series much promise.

Not finished in time for Monday, but here are some thoughts I haven’t seen reflected elsewhere, in response to the excellence of Andor.

Yes, it's a powerful depiction of resistance movements and how the state will always weaponize resistance against itself.

But Andor also has an omission that should remind we who watch shows like this to move *past* shows like this—because if we think that art alone will save us, we didn't pay enough attention to the plot.
