「姓氏标准可以提供线索，但不能确定族性，更不用说某些史料已证明他们属于另一个族群。实际上，对汉语文献进行反复核查实属必要。还有其他更可靠的标准能证实姓主确是粟特人，至少从源头上说是这样。名字的使用也一样：一个音译为汉语的粟特名可以用粟特语解释，至少说明该家族上一代仍把自己看作粟特人。另一个是婚姻标准：当一个康姓人与史姓或安姓人结婚，那双方可能都是粟特聚落成员。第三是地名标准：如果某家族有这些姓氏，并声称祖辈来自5世纪前后的西方，此外还有胡名，又在墓中找到和西方伊朗语族有关的一些物品或图像，那我们接触到的很可能就是一位粟特人。」
