I'm currently #Reading "The Islam Quintet" by Tariq Ali and "Ibn Fadlān and the Land of Darkness -Arab Travellers in the Far North"
After Ibn Fadlān's diary, is the travelogue of Abū Hāmid Al-Andalusī Al-Gharnātī and both those latter places feature prominently in Book 1 of the Islam quintet. As does Khwārazm - a city whose most enduringly famous and significant son even this mathphobe knows of😀

Ibn Fadlān wrote in the early 300s AH (~920CE) Abū Hāmid a couple of centuries later. This VERY disturbing passage reminded me that the past really IS a different place

I bought a slave girl who had already borne a child, and whose father, mother and brothers were still alive; I bought her from her owner for ten dīnārs. She was fifteen years old and as beautiful as the moon, with black hair and eyes, and skin as white as camphor. She knew how to cook, sew and embroider.

I also bought, for five dīnārs, another Greek slave girl, eight years old. One day I bought for half a dīnār two jars full of honeycomb with its wax and I said to her:

‘I want you to purify this honey and extract the wax.’

Then I went out and sat on a bench at the door of the house, where people were gathered. After sitting with them for a while, I went back into the house and saw five disks of wax as pure as gold and two jars full of liquid honey that seemed like rose water. The honey had been purified and returned to the two jars, all within an hour.

She had a child, but it died. I freed her and gave her the name Maryam.

I wanted to take her with me to Saqsīn, but I was afraid of the way she might be treated by the Turkish concubines who had borne children to me and whom I kept in Saqsīn.

Currently #Reading two very different #nonfiction books and loving them both. "Humsafar: The World of Urdu Poetry" by is strengthening my desire to learn more of that language to get more out of its #poetry - poetry the book breaks down so clearly as in the attached diagram of how a ghazal is structured. Highly recommended!

As is Zeinab Badawi's "An African History of Africa" - the first book I've ever read to consider the history of the continent from within. A laudable and MUCH-needed objective. I'm only halfway but already I've learned so much and had so many preconceptions and orthodox, eurocentric historical assumptions challenged.

#WritersCoffeeClub 7/15 Do you read a lot outside of your comfort zone?

Not anymore.

For most of my life, I read whatever I could grab. Thrillers, mysteries, hist fic, fantasy, SF, YA, adventures, some romance.

These days, I read my comfort books, often several times, cycling through them. They are where I go to rest my mind and my soul.

The world has become so taxing and chilling, I don't need to stretch myself in reading. I go for feel-good books now.
