Privacy tip: When you sell or trade-in a vehicle, remember to erase all of your data from the in-car electronics. The car dealerships will NOT do this, although they should be required to.
This wasn’t done for the last few vehicles I’ve purchased. I know one previous owners name, where she lives, what her taste in music is, where her dad lives (and how often she visited him), and what restaurants she often went to. In the wrong hands, this is dangerous as hell.
🚨Our governments are about to decide whether 450M Europeans deserve privacy - or not.

German government publishes law to guarantee 'right to encryption' 🔒 💪
We at Tuta Mail applaud the #German government for this move in the right direction. 👏 👏 👏

Hackers can steal 2FA codes and private messages from Android phones. The "Pixnapping" attack is a really clever piece of research. It shows that the theoretical wall between apps on your phone isn't as solid as we'd like to believe. By exploiting a GPU side channel, a malicious app with zero permissions can effectively screenshot other apps, one pixel at a time. It's a reminder that security is a stack, and a vulnerability at the hardware level can undermine everything built on top of it.
TL;DR
👾 A new attack called "Pixnapping" can read visual data from other apps on Android devices.
🔑 It exploits a GPU side-channel leak to steal sensitive info like 2FA codes and messages, pixel by pixel.
⚠️ The scary part: the malicious app required for the attack needs zero special permissions to be granted.
🧠 While complex to pull off, this is a serious proof of concept that challenges the core idea of OS app sandboxing.

The #NYPD Is Teaching America How to Track Everyone Every Day Forever
Wherever you go in #NYC, there’s a good chance the #police are #tracking you. Enter the subway system, for instance, & your #identity, #banking information & #location trickle into city databases.
Walk down the street & you’re likely to be recorded by one of thousands of security cameras, some belonging to the NYPD, others connected or available to the dept's databases.

Privacy is a human right, but getting more people to care about it is frankly (and literally!) a full-time job.
2025 has seen some of the worst attacks on privacy to date, and it has also represented the greatest commitment to our work our team has ever made.

Yesterday I started receiving targeted ads based on ebook borrows from my library (San Francisco Public Library). The content of those ads suggested that the targeters were aware of which books I chose to read.
Today I checked off an item on my bucket list: release an app on the Apple App Store. 🎉
I started this app to help me manage my as-needed medication, with three core values:
1. 🔒 Privacy First (no tracking or data harvesting)
2. 🎁 Always Free (no ads or subscriptions)
3. 📂 Open Source (transparent & inspectable)

New Privacy Guides article 🔓👁️🗨️
by @jw and me:
Outside the Fediverse, you may have
encountered platforms where you were obligated to provide your "real" name.
These so-called "real-name" policies, often in fact requiring legal names, are horrible for everyone's privacy. But it's also important to consider how discriminatory and dangerous they are.
Pseudonymity isn't a trivial matter,
it saves lives.
Fighting against policies attacking
online pseudonymity, such as real-name policies, age-verification policies, and Chat Control proposals, isn't just a banal fight to keep using silly nicknames online. It's a battle for democracy, for civil liberties, and for human rights.

I know there's a general "cause fatigue" with the current state of the world, and I feel it too.
But in my years working in privacy,
I don't think I've seen anything as terrifying as this European Chat Control proposal. And I'm not even European.
Everyone needs to pay
much more attention and be much more worried and outraged about this.
This proposal is the most dystopian glimpse into a horrible authoritarian future I have seen so far in the West.
It looks dismal, but we can still stop it
if we all work TOGETHER NOW ✊
There isn't much time left though,
so don't put it to next week.
Democracy dies in silence.

So did you know that the database ICE's facial recognition app uses is just a collection of TSA photos taken of American boarding domestic flights.
The good news is you can opt out of that crap and it will make it much harder for ICE goons to identify random people who questions about the ICE abductions on the street.
This is a massive lesson in why it's generally bad to give up privacy to governments.
Forcing a Chinese company to sell TikTok won’t solve the biggest problem with #TikTok: the fact that so people get their “#news” from platforms that are designed to hijack attention for commercial gain, not to deliver reliable information.
If China wants information on Americans, it can buy data from companies since there are no effective #privacy laws.
And American-owned Facebook and X have shown themselves to be as bad or worse as TikTok at spreading #misinformation.

I was talking with a friend about dating apps, privacy, security and safety.
They are using Feeld, which lets you tag specific kinks -- and which changed their TOS about 2 years ago (IIRC) to specify that they sell user data. (In a massive betrayal of the trust and safety of their user base.)
My friend's response was that they aren't ashamed of who they are and if an app wants to sell their data, no big deal.
My position was that in a time of rising fascism, it's really worth thinking about how in the 1930's, IBM set up the systems to tag and sort people by "undesirable" qualities. In Germany.
I fear for people with all my heart.
For the reading comprehension impaired, let me be clear: I'm not telling anyone not to live their life. I'm saying be smart, raise your game on privacy and security, and keep yourself and your people as safe as you can in a brutal world.
@Em0nM4stodon wrote a great article on data privacy and dating apps (with a focus on queer apps but also relevant to any dating apps).

If you are the tech-savvy person within your family or friends group
:
Never ever shame someone for coming to you for advice after being the victim of a scam, malware, or for using an unsecure product.
If you do this,
they might never come back to you later. They might just feel so ashamed they will just stay alone with their tech problems.
Instead, always tell them:
1. It was a good idea to come to you with this. Be empathetic with them 💚
2. Give them advice on how to minimize the damage now. Actionable advice 🚑
3. Help them harden their security for now and for the future. Recommend better products to them. But be careful not to overwhelm them with advice. One step at the time 🔒
4. Talk to them with respect and empathy. Tell them how the people who abused their trust are horrible and anyone can fall for the right scam. Remind them there are things to do to reduce the risks of being victimized again in the future, and help them slowly implementing these 💪
5. Be thankful they trusted you with this. It means they think highly of you 🥰

If everyone was refusing to provide official IDs to verify their identity and age on social platforms, and just let their account rot there unused instead, we would soon see platforms themselves starting to advocate against these invasive laws to recover their users.
Just saying.
They need you more than you need them.
Stop complying with invasive requests.
