Today is also International Crow and Raven Appreciation Day and I for one, appreciate the corvids. They are extraordinarily intelligent birds! Here is my murder of crows, part of my #termsOfVenery series of collective nouns for animals series of prints.

The raven is the official bird of the Yukon, in my print with the official flora, fireweed.

Lastly my crow print, inspired by a photo my husband took.

Happy birthday to #mathematician & geodesist Gladys West (née Brown in 1930)! Shown with satellite tracks & 3 satellites important to her career: Seasat, GEOS-3 & a GPS satellite. Her work, using math to precisely model the shape of Earth, laid the groundwork for GPS! Born to sharecropper parents in Virginia, she graduated with a Math BSc in ‘52 then MSc at VSU in ‘55. 🧵1/n

Today is #Kalevala day.

As such, I thought it would share my Kalevala-themed #linocut prints from 2020.
There's the swan of Tuonela, who swims on the black river, which is the gateway to the world of the dead.
There's Otso, the bear king of the forest.
And there's Ikiturso, a mythological sea monster.

Stonechat. Finished wood engraving, first test print, which I'm very pleased with and the photo that the engraving is based on, taken on one of our regular walks on Ilkley Moor.

100x100mm lemonwood block engraved with a stonechat perched on a young, growing and unfurling, bracken frond, with a foreground of bracken and other plants, receding through shrubs along a path to a stile in a drystone wall, with more moorland beyond. The bird locks inquisitively at me. An engraving tool and a pencil are included for scale.

Happy birthday to #physicist Harriet Brooks (1876 - 1933) who discovered atomic recoil, Radon & recognized radioactive elements could undergo chains of transmutations into a series of new elements. #nuclear #physics⁠

She was Rutherford’s 1st grad student at McGill. After publishing her results in 1899 she completed her MSc in 1901 on “Damping of Electrical Oscillations,” before embarking on #radioactivity research.⁠ 🧵

My 9.25" x 12.5" linocut portrait of physicist Harriet Brooks (1876 - 1933) in a gradient of turquoise to green, shows her and her discovery of atomic recoil in gold (Radon gives off an alpha particle and daughter nucleus goes in opposite direction). A series of diagrams at the bottom shows how the Rutherford research group understood chains of radioactive active transmutations at the time.
