I had such a supportive mom! When I came out to her (two occasions -- when I told her that I was a boy and a girl, and when I told her that l liked both boys and girls), she was like, "That's who you are!" and then would put on another Bowie record. I know not everyone has had supportive parents, but even just having one that accepted me as who I am made all the difference in my life. It didn't stop the bullying, but it gave me the confidence to be myself -- and that was HUGE!

So just a heads up for people who aren’t queer, this Pride eve; Pride is around the corner and it’s probably going to feel a little different than usual.
• Expect it to feel angrier. We joke that July is Wrath month, but don’t be surprised if people at Pride events are a bit more on edge, our signs punchier, and our jokes sharper.
• Allies: more than ever before, be aware that you are guests in a queer space. Many of us are going to need the space to feel safe and comfortable for us now, more than ever.
• We have a gay agenda (see the above quote), don’t try to distract from it with platitudes. With trans people under an organized, legislative attack and nearly 60% of Republicans being against same-sex marriage, none of us are safe this year.
• Let’s not do the “Pride events need to be family friendly”. They generally are, but our family is angry.
For #pride month you cannot say “let me get this straight”. Instead say “ok just so we’re queer”.
I am BETTING that if I wear red the entire next week in my #WaltDisneyWorld #RideShare business, the majority of my passengers won't know why!
So, here I am, asking for a freely-printable pdf-sized-for-a-5"x7" landscape cardstock that will tell them why!

A reminder to all the TERFs and transphobic queers out there that the first Pride was a riot, literally. And it was led by transwomen and drag queens, including Marsha P. Johnson, as well as lesbians, who refused to submit to police bodily searches during a raid on the Stonewall Inn night club, and who fought back during the cops' attempts to mass arrest patrons and community members.

Pride Month starts today and why it matters to me.
I didn't come out to a soul until I was 51. Not because I didn't know but because it was a part of me I squashed down. I came out as Queer because the label gave me room to breathe after years of telling myself I was bi but never fully embracing it. I'm honestly still unsure whether I was protecting myself because it felt "safer" to believe a lie or if there was a kernel of truth in it. But since coming out, the "gay part" of me has been the loudest by leaps and bounds.
The real me finally getting sunlight or some kind of Queer Rumspringa after years of repression? Possibly both. What I do know is this: I would have figured it out a lot sooner if I’d lived in a world that didn't fear difference.
I'm not great at writing these sorts of personal posts, but I’ve felt especially introspective after just losing a childhood friend. The second in the past year. One was gay, but still neither knew this part of me until the very end. And that’s not enough.
So here’s to Pride, whether you came out at 14 or 94. Love to all of you, and a knowing wink to the ones who didn’t take the direct road to their truth. Not late. Not broken. Not alone.
