Are you old enough, like me, to remember the Exxon Valdez catastrophe, a disastrous oil spill off the coast of Alaska in 1989?

Here's some important info about that event from Greg Palast...
________________________

"Don’t Buy Exxon’s Fable of the Drunken Captain"

The true cause of the Exxon Valdez catastrophe was the oil giant breaking their promises, cynically and disastrously, in the 15 years leading up to the spill.

As for Captain Joe Hazelwood, he was below decks, sleeping off his bender. At the helm, the third mate would never have collided with Bligh Reef had he looked at his Raycas radar.

But the radar was not turned on. In fact, the tanker’s radar was left broken and disabled for more than a year before the disaster, and Exxon management knew it. It was just too expensive to fix and operate.

Today, three decades after the oil washed over the Alaskan beaches, you can kick over a rock and it will smell like an old gas station.

The Fable of the Drunken Captain serves the oil industry well. It falsely presents America’s greatest environmental disaster as a tale of human frailty, a one-time accident. But broken radar, missing equipment, phantom spill teams, faked tests — the profit-driven disregard of the law — made the spill an inevitability, not an accident.
________________________

FULL ARTICLE -- https://www.gregpalast.com/dont-buy-exxons-fable-of-the-drunken-captain-2/

#Environment #Climate #ClimateChange #Capitalism #Pollution

Before the automobile industry invented the catalytic converter, the costs of reducing air pollution seemed astronomical, enough to bankrupt the entire industry. After they invented the catalytical converter, the costs were manageable. And they only invented it because they were faced with the threat of being shut down.

Industries creating harms often claim that controls and regulations are impossible, would bankrupt them, etc., trying to make their existence into a zero-sum game (for some people to have the benefit of our industry, other people must suffer). AI companies claim they must steal copyrighted works because they could not exist otherwise; or be allowed to use as much electricity as they demand in spite of the costs. But it's B.S., and we should stop accepting this rhetoric.
Factory farming is wrong on every possible level; cruel, inhumane, pollution, and health. DAERA in NI are contradicting themselves here - belatedly expressing concerns about pollution, having enabled so many of these factory farms in the last ten years or so; currently putting a plan in place to try and save Lough Neagh and restore it.
At the same time, DAERA have announced an appeal against the court ruling that stops polluting gas caverns being excavated in a Marine protected area at Islandmagee. The company concerned has just bailed out of Harland & Wolff Shipyard in Belfast, as they have no money and lots of bills.
Why is DAERA talking out of both sides of its mouth? Why are they appealing a court ruling against a company with no money? Why pretend they are concerned with pollution in Lough Neagh, while hoping to overturn a ruling against pollution of a protected marine area?
Some years ago, Nichola Mallon of SDLP, reinstated sand dredging in Lough Neagh, despite a court ruling against it.
Lord/Earl of Shaftsbury gets a royalty for every tonne of sand dredged there. Edstrom is a West Point graduate, author, and former U.S. Army infantry officer who got out of the military after serving Afghanistan to study climate change and finance at Oxford University. Edstrom says the 20-year-long Afghanistan War contributed enough carbon emissions to kill multitudes of people. His assessment is based on studies such as one published in Nature Communications, which estimated that approx 4,400 metric tons of CO2 emissions is enough to kill one person.

The U.S. Department of Defense is required to report its energy use to the Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program. In FY2020, total estimated DoD greenhouse gas emissions based solely on fuel usage data were more than 51 million metric tons of CO2. That figure includes emissions from standard day-to-day operations as well as emissions from non-standard operations such as combat support, law enforcement, emergency response, and spaceflight. Edstrom says there’s more to be concerned with than just operating emissions.

Edstrom says the U.S. Department of Defense budget, which in fiscal year 2021 was more than $703 billion, is bolstered by fear. He thinks Americans’ fears are misguided. Edstrom thinks the future military will be more electric, but says requiring the military-industrial complex to report the full scope of its emissions, beyond just fuel usage, is a crucial step in getting there.

#POLLUTED_CLIMATE #ClimateChange #ClimateCrisis #Military #Army #Earth #Environment #Science #POLLUTION

2.
