Today's bike ride is an exploration of the area around Fish Creek in Fish Creek Provincial Park.

This Provincial park is one of the largest urban parks in North America, stretching 19 km (12 mi) from east to west. With an area of 13.48 km2 (5.20 sq mi).

It is bordered on three sides by the city of Calgary, and on the west by the territory of the Tsuu T'ina Nation (Sarcee), a First Nation.

On May 1, 1865, in the 1st spring of freedom, Black Charlestonians held a procession to honor Union soldiers buried in a mass grave.
They came with roses. With hymns. With children.
It was the 1st Memorial Day.
But America gave the credit to others & buried the memory.

Imagine a striking bird that lives along the coast, especially on rocky shores. The Sooty Oystercatcher is entirely black, from its head to its tail, looking very sleek. What really stands out are its bright, almost glowing, red-orange bill, which is quite long and strong, and its pinkish-red legs. These vibrant colors against its dark body make it quite distinctive.

These birds are found in places like Australia and New Zealand. They are often seen walking confidently on rocks or along the waterline, searching for food. Their name "oystercatcher" gives a clue about what they eat, but they're not just limited to oysters! They use their powerful, specially designed bill to pry open or even hammer into hard-shelled creatures like mussels, limpets, and, yes, oysters. They can also snip the muscles inside a slightly open shell to get to the soft meat. Besides shellfish, they'll also eat crabs, marine worms, and other small creatures found in the coastal environment.
