Last night I had the huge privilege of interviewing the great Sylvia Earle about the ocean. She said this, which really stuck with me:

"If Jane Goodall had been limited to studying chimps by hauling individuals out from high above the forest and inspecting what came up, she would have learned almost nothing"

But that's mostly how we study ocean life.

For >30 years, the world’s largest #iceberg was stuck in the Antarctic. 5X the size of NYC’s land area & >1k feet deep, the mammoth piece of ice became loose in 2020 & began a slow drift toward the #SouthernOcean.

Now, #A23a, as it’s known, is spinning in place.
After leaving #Antarctic waters, the iceberg got stuck in a #vortex over a seamount….

The most extreme rogue wave occurred in November 2020, lifting a single buoy off of Canada's British Columbia coast some 58 feet high. I had an incredible encounter with this rare Fiordland crested penguin on the West Coast, a moment I’ll never forget.
These elusive penguins are one of the world’s rarest, and facing threats from habitat loss, predators, and climate change. Encounters like this remind me why protecting New Zealand’s fragile coastal ecosystems is so important to me.
