Diary of an AuDHD Squirrel. Day 1048 , Thursday 10/09/2026

Thursday started earlier than I hoped, next door still not having moved yet & also not having learned to be a bit more considerate of a morning!

Managed to dig some spoons from behind the couch, or somewhere, & got some of the bigger jobs done.

The fridge has been cleaned to within an inch of its life both inside & out.

I also get the plinth heater its annual service - I always try to do it before we put the heating back on each autumn / winter & while it doesn’t get too dirty if done regularly the cottonwool buds I used to clean the narrow blades of the fan were evidence that it is a job that needs doing.

Finished the day off with a romp thru the Starfield, I’m learning about ship building in between missions and trial & error is the name of the game here!
Still I now have fast access to the outside from the cockpit now & I have started to build a workshop in the back of my ship. I have decided to be a nomad this time around & live out of my vessel.

Final Thoughts.

I have an invite to join in a multi-player game,but even though it is with people I know well I am … not at ease with the prospect. The last time I tried it was too much in the end & I have not the energy to interact with others at the moment. This year has taken its toll.

Still there is always next year!

Diary of an AuDHD Squirrel. Day 851 , Wednesday 25/02/2026

Wednesday started at around 7am.

Breakfast was soon followed by chores & then, as it was a nice sunny day I managed to get some suff done.

Moved the Virgin Media modem downstairs out of the box room. A job which was complicated by the fact I had to move the big bookcase we have in the corner of the lounge.
Always a fun job - its about 7 foot tall & one has to take all the books out & empty the cupboard at the bottom to move the sucker!

Still all sorted in the end & everything was back up & working within a couple of hours.

Also did a bit more prep work in the box room while I was in there.

Made some definite progress with my bookshelf re-org too which was good!

The new ear cushions for my SteelSeries headphones came this afternoon, soon fitted & they are just as comfy as the originals if very slightly bigger.

Finished the afternoon with a couple of hours in medieval Bohemia

Not a bad day at all, my brain was still a bit all over the place though. I seem to be significantly more clumsy at the moment!

Diary of an AuDHD Squirrel. Day 768 , Thursday 04/12/2025

Thursday started stupidly early, Mrs S got up around 06:30 & despite the fact that I had had almost no sleep last night I got up to make her breakfast.

It’s been a busy day, I volunteered to let relatives know about our sad news while Mrs S went to her mums house to start tracking down the important documents we will need in the near future.

I’ve also been trying to get source an engineer to come & sort out our boiler - I have failed royally on that mission.
Our go to plumber did break cover just before 1pm with a text to say he would call us later but he hasn’t.
So tomorrow, nearly a week after the I found the fault, I have to start looking for a replacement plumber - I shall try the neighbours & try & get a recommendation in the morning. Friday is a pro day for this but needs must.
There is an emergency option, apparently Vaillant will come out & repair an out of warranty boiler - for a not insubstantial fee, but we may have to go down that route.

I’m so tired, & anxiety levels are off the graph … I need to make some progress with this flipping boiler tomorrow or I will be hiding under the chair this time tomorrow!

Diary of an AuDHD Squirrel. Day 867 , Friday 13/03/2026

Friday started just after 7am after a decent nights sleep.

The day started bright & sunny, if cold, clocking in at just over 4ºC when I got down to the kitchen.

Breakfast & chores too up most of the morning then my ADHD brain decided that, having move the desk & the bed arpund I needed to create more hanging space in my wardrobe by moving some of the shelves. I was very disappointed when my ‘bespoke’ wardrobe was made offsite in individual units but I have to admit that having them designed so that shelves could be moved or removed was a stroke of genius which, for the price of a bit of elbow grease, a length of oval chrome bar & a couple of appropriate brackets means I’ve increased my hanging space by about 60% & still maintained the same number of shelves - even if some of them are ½ the height they once were.

I managed to squeeze in some work in the box room, I’ll post some during/ after photos when its done & I have had time to write the alt-texts for them.

Got a couple of hours in medieval Bohemia too!

Final Thoughts.

Not a bad day at all, my back is really not happy with me though - I might have to get serious about having a sofa day tomorrow!

Diary of an AuDHD Squirrel. Day 868 , Saturday 14/03/2026

Saturday started at around 07:30 the alarm waking me for the first time in I don’t know how long!

I made breakfast for the two of us & then, once Mrs S had pootled off to do the shopping did my chores, which on a Saturday now includes hoovering the house & cleaning the floors in the bathroom & the w/c.

I also did a bit more work in the box room, the prep work is nearly done, I need to sand the walls &
Wash them with sugar soap & then decide wether I get a professional in to do the paint work & hang the wallpaper or do it myself.
It shouldn’t be a hard decision, I have the decorating skills of a tape worm so it shouldn’t be a no brainer! However I have been brought up to believe that one should be able to decorate ones own home & it chafes something terrible to consider paying someone to do it for me!

We shall see how I feel after I have completed all the prep work!

We spent the afternoon catching up on a couple of things that Mrs S wanted to watch then wee ended the day with a Chinese takeaway (Kung Po duck for me) while we watched ‘The Hunt for Red October’ The very obvious ‘blue screen’ scene at the end has not been improved when they digitised the movie!

I wonder why they call it digitising it … surely it should be binarising it? Ah the tangents an ND mind wanders off on!

Diary of an AuDHD Squirrel. Day 866 , Thursday 12/03/2026

Thursday started around 07:15, I managed to get a decent nights sleep by the simple trick of putting ear plugs in!

It’s been a wet & windy day, punctuated by numerous short but annoying power cuts!

In the face of this I decided to tackle the mutant paperwork pile on my desk - progress has been made but there is still a way to go!

We had a fried chicken takeaway for tea - it has to be said that I think I am going off them, it was ok but I didn’t especially enjoy it.

Final Thoughts.

I’ve moved back to using my Logitech K780 keyboard with my iPad, the Apple Magic Keyboard I was using having gone back into service with the Mac Mini. I had forgotten what a nice keyboard this is!

Given the dreary state of the weather I am quite pleased with what I managed to get done today!

Diary of an AuDHD Squirrel. Day 769 , Friday 05/12/2025

Friday started at a much more reasonable time of 07:30 which would have been a blessing if I had managed to get anything like a decent nights sleep. But the night was disturbed both by an utter inability to fall asleep & the cries of one of the children next door which went on for ages in the early hours of the morning.

The morning was spent perusing various tasks with my head all over the place.

I have finally got confirmation that we will have a new boiler fitted next Wednesday, so I can rest easy until Wednesday morning when hopefully I won’t have to chase this on the day!

Mrs S has been beavering away thru her mums paperwork to track down the critical papers necessary for the current circumstances.

This afternoon we chilled out & caught up on some of TV shows & treated ourselves to our usual Friday takeaway despite the cold!

Final Thoughts.

I am tired to my bones, but I think that things have moved forward satisfactorily today & I hope that that will allow me to sleep tonight!

Another busy day tomorrow, we’re off on a mission to start brining some order to my MiLs house now that she is gone. We’re also planning a last pre-Christmas trip to Costco™ & possibly get some other shopping in on our way home.

It will be nice to be in a house with the heating on, if only for a short while!

Diary of an AuDHD Squirrel. Day 770 , Saturday 06/12/2025

Saturday started at around 7am.

We had a quick breakfast then organised ourselves to go & make a start on sorting out my MiLs stuff.
This is such a huge job, but as with all huge jobs the approach to take is to take it step by small step.

There was also the opportunity to have a hot shower while we were there - oh the bliss of hot water to wash in!

We did achieve a decent amount today, but there will be many more days before it is all done.

We got home early this afternoon & having sorted out some of the paperwork & items that had been brought back we settled down & caught up with a couple of TV shows.

How is it so much of adulting is not taught in school - there are so many things that one has to deal with (& I can’t even speak of all the extra duties that fall on the shoulders of those who have children to look after) with almost no training & very little in the way of help & guidance other than applying goodly amounts of common sense & a willingness not to drown in a sea of paperwork & asset management! Not to mention the mountains of rubbish that suddenly appear as if by magic!

I am clinging to the life raft of hope that is the promise of a new heating boiler being fitted on Wednesday!

I felt like I was struggling again with the dark monster (depression). But, after some DuckDuck scrolling, I came to a site where they had an article on "Autistic Burnout".

I read more and when I came to these bits, I felt like they had been writing about me!

Sunday Started just after 8am after a nice long sleep (with the aid of ear plugs).

Usual Sunday with chores then breakfast then more chores.

I did my best to avoid doom scrolling but it’s hard to be completely cut off from the madness happening in the world.

We put the Christmas decorations away today, strictly speaking 12th night is tomorrow but Mrs S is back in work so today it was.

I say we, it was ,as usual, mostly house-elf work.

We had a nuked lasagna for tea because I really could not be bothered to do anything more adventurous.

Back to normal for a couple of days then it’s my MiL’s funeral on Wednesday.

Diary of an AuDHD Squirrel. Day 771 , Sunday 07/12/2025

Sunday started really early at just gone 6am.

The original plan was to go with Mrs S to her mums & await the folks from Careline to come & pick up their kit - which I deinstalled yesterday when I was there.
But the cold I had the other week has, mostly because we’re living without proper heating, gone to my chest & given me a hacking cough. I’m also overwhelmed by everything that has happened this week. Once upon a time I would have pushed on regardless & then had the inevitable implosion. But these days both myself & Mrs S recognise the signs that I’m struggling & so she insisted I stay at home & rest up.
To be fair the first half of the coming week is going to be full on & going Into it exhausted mentally & physically would be unwise.

I did however make us both breakfast & get all the chores done.

I decided to install the mini stereo system that I brought back from my MiLs yesterday.
It’s a Panasonic SA-PM71 SD & has quite the history - I originally bought it when my first Awia tower system died. When we got our first AVR in 2012 I gave this to my FiL because he had nothing to play CDs on.
It shows it pays to get quality kit sometimes though, this has been a well used piece of kit & it is still going strong!

I also dug out my old usb extended apple keyboard to use at my desk and there is so much space between the keys!
Also nice positive feel to them - might keep this setup now I've moved to my Mac mini and use my BT keyboard downstairs with the ipad.
(Update 21:43 - this is in fact what has happened)

Spent a pleasant morning tinkering with the new setup, the Panasonic mini system has an SD drive but it doesn’t have Bluetooth so the Mac is connected via the headphone jack to the aux input on the stereo. The sound is surprisingly good the speakers on the Panasonic are 3 way ones with a decent bass for such small speakers.

Mrs S got back around 1pm so we had a light lunch & settled down to relax & catch up on some TV shows.

Final Thoughts.

It’s not been a bad day, I desperately needed some alone time & this morning gave me that. Still got this flipping rag end of a cold though!

There is much to do tomorrow, but that is tomorrow’s problem!

Diary of an AuDHD Squirrel. Day 772 , Monday 08/12/2025

Monday started just before 7am. Well actually it started about an hour earlier with next door deciding that 6am is a good time to start vacuuming the house!

Got breakfast & then sorted out my chores before we had to go out & about.

We spent a couple of hours at my MiL's house working our way steadily thru the mountain of stuff = today I nearly cleared out 3 small draws, I got distracted by the contents of a cupboard - ADHD is a bugger sometimes that & the whole completionist side of my autism kicking & & trying to keep me at it for longer than we had.
We made a small but noticeable dint in the whole house clearing project today.

We treated ourselves to lunch at a pub about 10 minutes away on the edge of the moors that does nice food but is quite expensive. Sadly they were so busy serving the corporate Christmas lunch folk that my steak & stilton sandwich was barely warm by the time it finally arrived.

We headed back after lunch &, after dropping off some books at a local charity shop we made our way to the undertakers. The Undertaker was a nice friendly chap & was happy to provide us with the initial details. We are somewhat stuck at the moment waiting on the MEs sign off of my MiLs death certificate. Once all the paperwork is sorted then we can get that particular ball rolling.

Drove home in the pouring rain after a quick visit to Sainsgogs to pick up a few essentials.
Got home just after 4pm & had a coffee & some rather nice chocolate cake that 'fell' into our shopping trolly in the shops!

I did us a light tea which we ate while watching a movie called 'The Holdovers' from 2023 - which was a nice slow paced comedy drama & we both quite enjoyed it.

I'm still struggling to keep all the nuts I'm juggling in the air - hopefully once the boiler is replaced on Wednesday that will be one less thing to worry about!

Diary of an AuDHD Squirrel. Day 952 , Saturday 06/06/2026

Actually got a proper lie in this morning - slept thru until 8am!

Made breakfast & did my chores then spent a couple of hours on NMS while Mrs S was out shopping.

Made us lunch when she returned then she helped me join the upper & lower halves of her desk together … which was the easy bit!

The rest of the afternoon was taken up with final touches, fitting the cupboard doors, fitting the double socket / USB power station, adding a pin board & sundry other things.

Finally finished just after 4pm. The only thing left is to either fit a lamp shade or a new light fitting, depending on what Mrs S decides this week. Also need to get some curtains & fit those.

Settled back with a movie - ‘Project Hail Mary’ a film that is fast becoming a firm favourite, accompanied by pizza & a couple of pints of cider.

A busy & frustrating day , with lots of little niggling challenges, but ultimately very satisfying!

Diary of an AuDHD Squirrel. Day 773 , Tuesday 09/12/2025

Tuesday started around 07:30 although my sleep had been disturbed, as it often is these days, by the kids next door running amok!

The plan for today was to have a fairly easy day with the highlight being a quick trip to Costco™ to get a few last Christmas goodies and then an easy afternoon just going thru the stuff we brought home yesterday from my MiLs.

So much else has happened to day - first the plumber, who has been problematical form the start, call to ask if we would pay for the boiler up front as he couldn't get it from his normal supplier. Even weirder he wanted it by bank transfer to his personal a/c rather than his business a/c.
I've dealt with this guy for 14 years but I got to wondering why he needed £1400 paid into his personal a/c when we haven't had a written quote or anything.
My spider senses were tingling and I discussed it with Mrs S who thought it was strange too - so I texted him back to say that rather than doing it that way we would go with more expensive option of getting the diverter valve replaced to get us past Christmas then revisit the new boiler in the new year, giving everyone chance to catch their breath & ensuring no-one was out of pocket.
Bearing in mind that he took 4 days to get back to me last week the fact that within 2 minutes he was on the phone saying that it was ok, he was owed money by another customer and would call in that debt to get our boiler. He also insisted that he had moved stuff around to do the boiler tomorrow and that it was all ok now. He pinged me literally 3 minutes later to say that all was good vis a vis paying for the boiler. Very strange.

I don't know if I'm being overly paranoid but this all seems very dubious to me.

We will go thru with the deal now he apparently has the boiler and we are desperate for the heating to be fixed one way or another. However after all this palaver we will be looking for a new plumber to service our boiler from now on.

In other, better?, news we have had a number of phone calls today moving things forward with regards to laying my MiL to rest, no date for the funeral as of yet but hopefully we will know that by the end of the week.

We started a Star Wars fest today - we're doing in chronological order so the middle trilogy first.

Ok after today's escapades by my 'friend' Simon the plumber I am stressed out of my tree. I'm imagining all kinds of things going wrong tomorrow and the whole situation has brought me perilously close to being totally overwhelmed.

Wednesday started at around 7am.

It’s been a quiet day, chores were followed by a romp around the Milky Way.

Yep that was pretty much it - what an exciting life I lead!

My leg is feeling better today, I’m hoping that it won’t be complaining like it has been doing the last few nights in bed & thus avoiding the need to drag it to the quacks tomorrow!

Diary of an AuDHD Squirrel. Day 774 , Wednesday 10/12/2025

Wednesday started around 06:30.

Got breakfast for the both of us & then did a couple of chores before getting dug into prep for Simon coming to fit the boiler.

Long story short - boiler is fitted & working after a really long day.

We are in heated bliss!
Also so nice to have a hot shower in my own bathroom!

All the financial stuff seems to have gone ok so just waiting on various registration docs to appear!

We celebrated with a Chinese takeaway & a couple a ciders!

Final Thoughts.

That a song a massive weight off my mind - we are going to have a day of doing very little tomorrow, I need to refit the door to the w/c room where the boiler lives & also refit the cupboard doors on the unit where the boiler is installed. But other than that & making a couple of phone calls in regards to hating my MiL to rest we have the day to ourselves!

Diary of an AuDHD Squirrel. Day 800 , Monday 05/01/2026

Monday started at just past 7am, as we return to a more normal week.

Chores took up the first half of the day then I spent the afternoon agonising over what game to play on the PS5.
I go thru these periods when nothing I normally like ticks the box & I have to look for something new.

I tried ‘Baldur’s Gate 3’, but couldn’t get on with the turn based combat - I may well return to it at a later date though.

Gonna try ‘Kingdom Come:Deliverance 2’ because there are any number of excellent reviews for it. Lets see if it tickles my fancy.

We had a takeaway for tea but I didn’t really enjoy it. A return to more basic foods won’t do me any harm though.

Final Thoughts.

I think I’m struggling a little again with being overwhelmed. Prolly why I’m struggling to concentrate & do the things I normally love.

Sunday started around 07:45.

Breakfast & a few chores were followed by a very lazy day.

We watched the next couple of movies in the Jack Ryan series … ‘Patriot Games’ & ‘Clear and Present Danger’. Ah the halcyon days when the US of Trumpton was a vaguely decent county.

Cheat stew & chips for tea, very nice even if I do say so myself!

Not a bad day, I have a week of mostly peace ahead & then Mrs S is off on a couple of weeks of hols.

Diary of an AuDHD Squirrel. Day 775 , Thursday 11/12/2025

Well the rarest of things happened this morning, I got up before Mrs S - only by moments, she got up as I stirred just before 8am.

She was surprised that she had slept so long while I had barely slept, maybe a couple of hours but I had spent most of the night tossing & turning.

I put the doors back on the small w/c we have the boiler in this boring & have gradually brought the room back to normality thru the day.

I did my daily chores along the way.

We got a lovely big chocolate cake for Christmas from Betty’s Tea shops which I have had to cut into slices & freeze so that it will keep until the festive day. I did however put by a couple of small slices to go with our coffee this afternoon & very nice it was too … none of this ‘chocolate flavoured’ cheap tat. Actual proper chocolate!

We had a Downton fest this afternoon, Mrs S seems happy to ease back on clearing her mums house & I am far too wise in her ways to argue that we need to keep up a steady pace because there is so very much to clear.
I did take down a photo of me & replace it with a rather beautiful glazed picture of a village (in Italy I think) that Mrs S has liked since she was young & earned a few brownie points by doing so.

Final Thoughts.

I am very down this evening, I think the stress of the last week is catching up with me & all the little things that normally drive me nuts but I stash away at the back of my mind are affecting me in a most disproportionate way.
I read earlier of a couple of my Peeps celebrating 44 years together and who are more in love now than when they met (and I sincerely wish them all the best!) our mere 25 years seems powers of magnitude less fulfilling. I can’t do or say anything, especially given current events. It’s just a case of knuckle down & mask for England.

Diary of an AuDHD Squirrel. Day 776 , Friday 12/12/2025

Friday started around 07:15 after a most excellent nights sleep!

I intended on having a totally lazy day but I found any number of little jobs to do this morning.

Mrs S was busy too & things have progressed apace, we now have a provisional date in early January for the funeral, it seems it’s a …. busy time of year (popular seems like the wrong word entirely) for such things. Other arrangements are also falling into place.

However after lunch of beans on toast we settled down to an extended Downton fest!

We ordered a pizza & a burger from one of our favourite takeaways tonight, but they failed miserably, it took then more than an hour to deliver & then only because we chased it, when it arrived it was cold & my burger was not at all what I ordered.
If we ever order from them again it will be online (they are on Just Eat) so at least we can reflect our displeasure in a public forum!

Final Thoughts.

Well it was a good day until it wasn’t - the shambles of the takeaway delivery & then, as we watched ‘Downton Abbey: A New Era’ & we hit the sad bit near the end it was a little too soon, a little too fresh & we had to have a moment or ten.

We are watching the last of the movies tomorrow, I’ve not seen it & I sincerely hope they all make it to the end of the Grand Finale! (No spoilers please, it is what it is & I’m sure we will cope if the worst happens!)

Diary of an AuDHD Squirrel. Day 777 , Saturday 13/12/2025

Saturday started early at just past 06:30 when Mrs S got up - this wouldn't be too bad if she didn't then have breakfast and then vanish to her room for an hour reading leaving me to get on with assorted tasks.

She went shopping just after 8am and I finished my chores then settled down with my book because I could not find the energy to do anything else.

We had a visit from Shaun this afternoon, an upmarket 'odd job man' and an acquaintance. We need some guttering repairing and Kim essentially banned from such activities since falling all of 3ft and tearing my achilles tendon clean in half!
No doubt the price he quotes will raise eyebrows, he is not a believer in 'mates rates'. But the work needs doing and he is fairly competent.

We caught up on a couple of Mrs S's shows when she got back this afternoon & then finished our Downton Abbey fest with the 'Grand Finale' movie. If yr a fan & haven't seen it I would definitely recommend it!

We had a Chinese takeaway again for tea, Mrs S having gone off the fired chicken place after a bit of a dodgy tummy after the last one last weekend.

Final Thoughts.

A quiet day, tomorrow is Christmas decorating day & writing chrimbo card day - we really should get our act into gear and write these cards at the start of December but somehow we never quite manage that!
A new edition to the list this year after a surprise card from a Masto friend, a most pleasant surprise at that! 😊

It’s been a very quiet day, which is for the best - family meal on the other side of the hills tomorrow!

Diary of an AuDHD Squirrel. Day 778 , Sunday 14/12/2025

Sunday started late - a nice long lie in after a good nights sleep had me awake at just gone 8am.

It's been a quiet day in.

Did my chores after breakfast and then wrote to my ex-Deputy Head / English Language teacher. We have kept in touch down the years - he once went to bat for me against my parents and I have never forgotten that act of kindness so I make sure I keep him upto date with where I am. I really don't know what he thinks of me, given many of my peers are people of substance and position.

After lunch we put up the Christmas tree and the decorations, while we had our 2 traditional Christmas starter movies - 'Muppet Christmas Carol' for Mrs S and 'The Nightmare before Christmas' for me.
We finished off with another movie we discovered last year that is becoming a firm favourite - 'Arthur Christmas'.

I wrote my Christmas cards and called my brother and sister to arrange Boxing Day visits.

We are having Christmas Day at home ... it will be the first Christmas Day ever that we have had no external commitments!

Final Thoughts.

I am struggling again, despite the overall load easing. I was aware today that I had something of a short fuse and was triggered quickly by silly little things. I need to do better.
Back to the grind tomorrow, we have a number of appointments thru the day and a will spend some time at my MiLs sorting out some more of her stuff.
