German Song in America

In the late 1800s, German American singing festivals united German immigrant communities and brought new kinds of cultural activities to the United States.

"German Singing Society, 22nd Infantry, Ft. Keogh, May 13, 1894." An open-air songfest.

A large group of men, many in military uniforms of the 22nd Infantry, are assembled outdoors, likely in a grassy clearing surrounded by sparse trees. They stand or sit in loose rows, forming an informal choir or audience. Some are holding songbooks.

At the center, there is a conductor, indicating this is a singing event — a songfest organized by a German singing society, reflecting the strong German-American cultural traditions among soldiers.

digital black & white ink illustration of legendary musician & anti-racism activist, nina simone.
she looks straight at the viewer, her right eyebrow raised in a way that looks as though she's not, at this moment in time, accepting any shit.
through her hair, extending from the temple, are four jagged lines that resemble lightning bolts.
