#ThePlaylist has stalked into your podcast feed, eyeing up your car to see what it can pull off, because the theme this week is:

Monkey Man

Two hours of SWINGING tunes, all set and ready to get you shaking your (bright red) arses. Not all of the songs are about monkeys though. Some are about apes, great and otherwise. But we’ll overlook that.

This week's artwork, in which Troggie has turned me into a crested macaque. Which is a monkey, so it's ok.

Ancient icon depicting Saint Kassiana, or Kassia, an 8th-century poet and composer in Byzantium

This is a Byzantine-style Orthodox icon of St. Kassiani, identified by the Greek inscription as "the hymnographer". She's depicted in traditional robes with a halo against a gold background, holding a quill and a scroll inscribed with Greek text — the opening words of her famous hymn "Lord, the woman fallen into many sins...", known as the Hymn of Kassiani, traditionally chanted during Holy Wednesday services in the Orthodox Church.

Hildegard von Bingen receives a divine inspiration and passes it on to her scribe.

She's shown seated under an arched, architectural frame, with tongues of flame descending onto her head — representing the divine inspiration of her visions. She holds a wax tablet, recording what she sees, while her secretary/scribe (often identified as the monk Volmar) stands beside her with a book, ready to transcribe her words into the manuscript.

Meet your idols.

I had my first date with my wife-to-be on the same day I got the new Deicide album "Amon: Feasting the Beast". Being the oblivious nerd that i am, we listened to my favorite song "Sacrificial Suicide" a dozen or more times during that date. Despite that (or perhaps because of it?) she gave me a chance and 33+ years later we're still together.

During the Behemoth tour that kicked off last month I mentioned this story to Nergal, Behemoth's vocalist. (Deicide is opening for Behemoth on this tour, and Behemoth's band members are decades-long Deicide fans as well.) Fast forward to the show earlier this month in Worcester where my wife came with me, and Nergal invited me to join the band on stage to sing with them. A sacrificial serenade, as it were.

Meet your idols. Sometimes they turn out to be awesome, genuine, empathic people.
