RE: https://mastodon.social/@jwz/116814653971666254
It has come to my attention that some people don’t know about JWZ’s “Recent Movies and TV” pieces. If you’re one of them, stop what you’re doing and go read this.
20-year-old YouTuber Kane Parsons' horror movie "Backrooms" made $118M at the box office this past weekend and most of the audience was under 25. @IndieWire looks at why younger cinemagoers are attracted to films like this and fellow YouTuber Curry Barker's "Obsession."
For those who struggle with #Paywalls on #news/scientific #articles:
Two websites which are indispensable:
https://periscope.corsfix.com/ - Periscope acts as a proxy which gets past news paywalls
https://sci-hub.su/ - Sci-hub. also found at .st, .ru, .red, and .box; acts as a frontend to access scientific articles
And then this browser extension, Bypass Paywalls Clean, which works quite well (updates a lot, though, so stay up to date):
https://gitflic.ru/project/magnolia1234/bypass-paywalls-chrome-clean (Chromium browsers)
https://gitflic.ru/project/magnolia1234/bypass-paywalls-firefox-clean (Firefox browsers)
ONLY trust these git repos to source the extension. Magnolia1234 is the original developer. The extensions were removed due to DMCA from the browser extension stores, and now there are many malicious copies. This one is safe, I use it myself, and have done so since before it was removed (so I know who is the real dev).
---
In addition, for other #media, like #books, #manga, or #movies, others:
https://fmhy.net/ - Free Media Hell Yeah! is an aggregator of sites to access #free media. All sites are safe so long as you have an adblocker.
https://annas-archive.gl/ - Anna's Archive. An aggregate site for books. Pulls from many sources (incl. Lib-gen and zlib)
https://cineby.sc/ - Cineby. Watch nearly anything free, no ads
I'll give #music next.

Today's movie, Brothers Under Fire (2026) was a random watch from a Disney+ feed suggestion.
Brothers Under Fire is a rather generic and boring action film about a group of military men who fly to Mexico to attend one of their own's wedding. Unfortunate circumstances throw the group of men into conflict with a local cartel and things get crazy after that.
The movie spent almost an hour trying to make us care about a bunch of cardboard cutout characters. By the time the action kicked in, I was checked out as the script has some pretty clunky dialogue and no interesting characters.
Kiefer Sutherland is here for a paycheck. Omar Chaparro is good and intimidating as the cartel boss. James Keach is onscreen for a few minutes and he commanded the scenes he was in.
The action finale was mediocre with a seemingly endless stream of thugs emerging from three clown trucks.
By the time the credits rolled, I was left with feeling meh about the hour and 40 minutes I spent watching it.
Rated 3 out of 10.

Tickets acquired to see a special 35th anniversary showing of Point Break (1991) on the big screen 8/19 with my son. We're both really looking forward to seeing this one on the big screen -- it'll be the first time seeing the movie in a theater for both of us.

Wim Wenders

finished watching C.H.U.D.
C.H.U.D. stands for Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers... or does it?
This B movie is surprisingly watchable despite taking itself too seriously. Maybe it's the gritty urban setting, making it look like a 70s, socially conscious, cop drama... This gives it a patina of respectability, but then you have lightbulb-eyed rubber monsters straight from the 50s' cheapest sci-fi, which I respect but I understand that it's not a well respected film staple.
Look, it's a weird combo, and I like weird combos. Also John Goodman is on this for a few seconds, so I give this movie a heartfelt 👍. But I hope the sequel is sillier.
