The hidden history of 'White Christmas'

Nearly every pop music holiday song written in the past 80 years owes at least some of its DNA to one Christmas tune in particular: "White Christmas," written by Irving Berlin and sung by Bing Crosby, which he first recorded in 1942.

The cultural works becoming public domain in 2026, from Betty Boop to Nancy Drew

A new year means a new parade of classic characters and works entering the public domain.

By Rachel Treisman

The original version of Betty Boop.

This is a black and white title card from an early Betty Boop cartoon, showing the character in her classic iconic form.

The image is presented as a vintage film title card with an ornate, curved border frame typical of early 1930s animation. The word "FEATURING" appears at the top of the frame.

Betty Boop is shown as a large head portrait in her fully developed human form (not her earlier dog-eared version). Her distinctive features include:

An oversized round head with a very pale/white face

Enormous round eyes with prominent pupils looking slightly to the side

Long eyelashed

A small, cupid's bow mouth with a dark circle in the center (her signature "boop-oop-a-doop" mouth)

Large hoop earrings

Her iconic hairstyle: short, curly black hair with distinctive spit curls on her forehead and a characteristic wavy black hair mass

James Gunn's new "Superman" film debuts next week. "While the likes of Batman and Wolverine are popular because they break the rules, Superman has to be a law-abiding, upstanding all-American Mr. Nice Guy," Nicholas Barber writes. But that hasn't always been the case for Man of Steel. Read more from @BBCNews:

As a new year begins, let us ponder movies with different endings! This month, Susan's Cinema Stash will be showing the following films:

★ Clue (1985) - Based on the famous board game, different endings to the movie were famously shown in different theaters, giving everyone a different movie experience!

★ Harikrishnans - This film resolved a love triangle by showing different endings in different theaters! However, they only submitted one ending to the Central Board of Film Certification, thus embroiling the producers in legal battles.

★ 3 Ninjas (International Version) - This goofy action comedy was an entirely different experience if you watched it in America vs. the rest of the world when it came out.

★ Black Mirror: Bandersnatch - The famous interactive episode of this series where the audience will vote live on which paths we take!

These all start at 6pm PST with a short theater styled preshow before for everyone to enjoy. You can follow @GrillChill for updates on when we go live. Hope to see you there~ 🥸
