I would highly recommend seeking out the 2001 "Animaze" re-dub, rather than the original 1989 "Streamline" dub, if you would like to understand the plot better. The Streamline version is a more literal translation, which does not accurately portray the meaning of many scenes to an English audience, while the Animaze version at least attempts to translate for context. The Streamline version is a but more colorful at times, though.

This is Tarantino's "old man yelling at a cloud" movie. He's mad that things just aren't as good as they used to be back in the good ol' days, and in order to let out his frustrations, he has to do gruesome violence on a bunch of hippies to feel better. But, at least when he has a temper tantrum, we get it in gorgeous 35mm with some top tier acting talent. Still feels a bit self-indulgent, though, even for Tarantino.

Rated Ghost World 9/10

This is a movie about being a fuck-up, and deciding to put a chapter of your life behind you, and ow, it stings. This movie is also a great collection of "loser porn", which both laughs at and cherishes its showcase of weirdos. It's such an awkward movie, about one of the most awkward periods of your life. It nails what it feels like to be 18 and so fucking lost with who you are and where you are going. One moment you are a carefree high school student, and the next you are supposed to decide what to do with your adult life, all the time feeling that there is almost no way you are going to get anything right. It's also great to watch Buscemi at his peak, and Johansson at her beginning. Makes me miss Thora Birch dearly.
