We've spotted this cute Barred Owlet standing tall, showing off her legs high up in the moss-covered trees, as s/he perched on a thin branch, being vigilant and poised, one of her wings stretched out. Such a character it looked like having wool leggings on, made me smile.
It was not easy to notice this little fledgling, her feathers blended in with the natural environment so much, providing camouflage among the dense, Pacific Northwest forest setting at Beaver Lake Park, Washington state in May 2024.

* Flavoparmelia caperata
* A nice moss that looks like asparagus tips, with Xanthoria parietina & physcia adscendens (?) growing through / around it
* Parmotrema, physcia & candelariella
* Caloplaca species

I mentioned walls of moss, but I am tragically unable to choose just one picture worth my delight at this short but intensely mossy path. You can breathe the green just looking at the pictures.

A Northern Green Frog found the perfect spot for the impending heatwave. Stay cool my little friend!

Most of the photo is taken up by a large rock sitting in a shady brook. It is nearly entirely covered in bright green moss. Toward the center of the rock, on a mossy ledge, sits a Green Frog. Though much of its skin is metallic brown, the area under its eye and along mouth is bright green.

Trumpet Lichen (Cladonia fimbriata) growing between Haircap moss and stones

The photo shows a lichen growing on the ground between stones and dry haircap moss.
The lichen consists of tiny green lobes (leaves) at the base, from which small, upright, gray-green, trumpet-shaped podetia (the stems) grow.
The surface of the podetia looks as if it is covered with a granular powder called soredia.
The soredia consist of algae cells and fungal hyphae, a method of reproduction of the lichen when these soredia are spread by e.g. wind.
