KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC is the most important expansion of the #StarWars universe chez Liza

in 2003, THING1 was 6 years old and THING2 was 3. i was 2 years into homeschooling after 9/11 up-ended T1s entry to public school. so i used everything to get them to read.

so when they asked their dad to teach them how to play it, he did so with one caveat: they had to read back to him the prompts. boy, did that start the ball rolling. more in the alt…

the first stage of this process was for the guys to watch the paternal unit play the game. they’d do all their homeschooling work and put away the day’s mess in anticipation for after dinner gaming time. they’d spell out words and read along and learn the game’s logic watching their dad play.

that got old real fast. they wanted to play the game themselves.

we never said they couldn’t play it. we said, they could if they learned to read the prompts. so they teamed up and with their 6 and 3 year old ingenuity, they figured out how to finagle the game’s ACCESSIBILITY settings to have the game read back at them.

they waited for dad no more.

the fact that you can redo steps in the game was what really made this whole process a powerful learning experience. once they figured out the text and the clues, they’d call out for me, “MOM! COME WATCH!”; and i’d sit there and watch them not only play, but read to me the prompts and explain what they meant; OR that became the moment when they’d ask me what something meant.

so this game not only ended up being the catalyst for developing my sons reading abilities. it became their introduction to what we can learn about ETHICS, POLITICS, MORALITY through the story-telling and world-building of epics, sagas and the hero’s journey.

it’s been 22 years and we still talk about this game and how it impacted their childhood development.

i don’t game, yet KOTOR is the best game i never played.
