The “Flying Spaghetti Monster” is one of an “astonishing” array of deep-sea creatures scientists have discovered living near an underwater mountain range off the coast of Rapa Nui, also known as Easter Island, in the Pacific Ocean. Live Science has more: https://flip.it/wIHd76

American marine biologist, conservationist, and writer Rachel Carson died #OTD in 1964.
She is best known for her groundbreaking book "Silent Spring," published in 1962, which brought attention to the environmental impact of pesticides, particularly DDT, and sparked a global environmental movement. The book is often credited with inspiring the modern environmental movement and the establishment of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
"I like to define biology as the history of the earth and all its life — past, present, and future. "
American marine biologist, writer, and conservationist Rachel Carson was born #OTD in 1907.
Carson wrote only four books published during her lifetime which were "best-sellers": "Under the Sea-Wind" (1941); "The Sea Around Us" (1951); "The Edge of the Sea" (1955); "Silent Spring" (1962). A fifth book The Sense of Wonder (1965) was published posthumously.
British biologist and explorer Denis G. Lillie was born #OTD in 1884.
He is best known for his participation in the Terra Nova Expedition to Antarctica (1910–1913), led by Robert Falcon Scott. As a member of the expedition, he served as a biologist, focusing on marine biology and the study of Antarctic life. He was responsible for collecting and studying various marine specimens, contributing significantly to the scientific findings of the expedition.
American educator and zoologist Cornelia Clapp died #OTD in 1934.
Clapp was a pioneering zoology researcher and leading ichthyology scholar. Her work on the toadfish was instrumental in correcting the idea that its egg was attached by a "sucker" to the yolk stalk, as she discovered that it was instead adhered with a disc of "transparent secretion" that could be separated from the membrane.
