Let me take you #linux people on a little journey. Right now, there is a war. A war between those who fear the future of #nix and #NixOS and those who are apparently not getting the point.
To call something #opensource can mean so much nowadays. When it comes to the idea of an enterprise nixpkgs vs the open source or "community" #nixpkgs, I think it's time to make it clear:
#DeterminateSystems wants to have it's own #RHEL. Functions are decoupled from nix for a reason.

Have you ever wondered how many PDFs, images, videos, or particular kind of files you have on your device? It is the time to find out.
I am hereby proud to officially launch a Fedi-wide file count challenge, in exclusive partnership with the 2025-27 class of @xpub 👾
💁 How to participate
Go to your main device (not mobile)
Open the terminal
Run find . | grep '.pdf$' -c (on Windows: gci -r | where Name -match '\.pdf$')
Repeat the previous command, replacing “pdf” with any file format you are interested in sharing. We suggest: jpg, mp3, and png. 🔆 Bonus: html, js, ttf, odt, svg
Take a screenshot of the output
Share the screenshot on the Fediverse, using the #fileCountChallenge hashtag (please, copy-paste the actual text from the terminal in the image description/alt text)
Add your (user)name and results to the scoreboard
🆒 Bonus: share the story explaining why you have so many/little files for one format.

@simontatham It's been a looong time since I used #putty (I ran it in a #Wine "bottle", these came from #flatpak, I'm using Debian 13 #KDE). Thanks for all your efforts!
To my mind, 98% of the time, people would use putty to log into a #linux box/VPS, like say a #RaspberryPi (Raspberry Pi OS, is #Debian Trixie 13-based). This would be a sensible default assumption, **demographically**.
It took a good 2 hours of struggling, just to get 256 colors to work in Putty! (#Python's textualize library seriously expects 256, or *it can crash* when the Theme is changed). Please let the defaults be sane, so there's no struggle for 256 colors! Please alleviate my nerd rage - I beseech you!
1) Sane TERM env var:
Connection -> Data -> Terminal details -> Terminal-type string -> "putty-256color"
2) Sane default font:
Window -> Appearance -> Font settings -> "Change" button -> adwaita mono 12
3) Sane bolding of text:
Window -> Colors -> General options for color usage -> Indicate bolded text by changing: The font
4) Sane (Linux-terminal-style) Ctrl + Shift + {C,V} (for copy and paste):
Window -> Selection -> Assign copy/paste actions to clipboard -> Ctrl + Shift + (C,V}: System Clipboard

Hey #linux people and #developers, I need your advice.
My 8 year old son has fallen in love with this old laptop that honestly isn't useful for that much as the speed and wifi is so slow.
But he says he wants to learn how to code on it.
This brought me back to the days of GW-basic when I was a kid.
Is there something like gw or q basic for Linux. Something that would run on a 32 bit computer?
