Here's a little chatty video where I show off my current experimentation with the XFCE desktop environment.

I removed some of the panels and panel items. Replace the menu with Rofi launcher. Added tiling features to XFCE with the 'coretile' program.

Dear friends of the BSD Cafe,
This idea has been in my mind since the very beginning of this adventure, almost two years ago. Over time, several people have suggested it. But until recently, I felt the timing just wasn’t right - for many reasons. Today, I believe it finally is.
So I’m happy to announce a new service:
The BSD Cafe Journal - https://journal.bsd.cafe
At first, I thought I’d use BSSG for it (I even added multi-author support with this in mind), but in the end, it didn’t feel like the right tool for the job.
The idea is to create a multi-author space, with content published on a fairly regular basis. A reference point for news, updates, tutorials, technical articles - a place to inform and connect.
Just like people in Italy used to stop by cafes to read the newspaper and chat about the day’s news, the BSD Cafe Journal aims to be a space for reading, sharing, and staying informed - all in the spirit of the BSD Cafe.
What it’s not:
It’s not here to replace personal blogs, or excellent newsletters like @vermaden 's. And it’s not an aggregator.
What it is:
A place where authors can write original content, share links to posts on their own blogs or elsewhere, publish guides, offer insights, or dive into technical explanations.
The guiding principles are the same as always: positivity, constructive discussion, promoting BSDs and open source in general. No hype (sharing a cool new service is fine, posting non-stop about the latest trend is not), no drama, no politics. The goal is to bring people together, not divide them. To inform, not inflame.
Respect, tolerance, and inclusivity are key. Everyone should feel welcome reading the BSD Cafe Journal - never judged, offended, or excluded.
The platform I’ve chosen is WordPress, for several reasons: it’s portable (runs well on all BSDs), has great built-in role management (contributors, authors, etc.), and - last but not least - supports ActivityPub.
This means every author will have their own identity in the Fediverse (like: @stefano ) and can be followed directly, and it’ll also be possible to follow the whole Journal.
Original and educational content is encouraged, but it’s also perfectly fine to link to existing articles elsewhere. Personally, I’ll link my technical posts from ITNotes whenever I publish them there.
The goal is simple: a news-oriented site, rich in content, ad-free, respectful of privacy - all under the BSD Cafe umbrella.
Content coordination will happen in a dedicated Matrix room for authors. There’ll also be a public room for discussing ideas, giving feedback, and sharing suggestions.
Of course, I can’t do this alone. A journal with no content is just an empty shell.
So here’s my call for action:
Who’s ready to lend a hand? If you enjoy writing, explaining, sharing your knowledge - the Journal is waiting for you.

I grew up with #RaspberryPi and have picked up many skills along the way including #React, backend JavaScript (#NodeJS) and #Docker. My current obsession is monitoring all the things with #Grafana, #PRTG and #Prometheus. I’m based in the UK but open to primarily English-speaking roles in Germany, too. GNU Guix is a package management tool for and distribution of the GNU system. Guix makes it easy for unprivileged users to install, upgrade, or remove software packages, to roll back to a previous package set, to build packages from source, and generally assists with the creation and maintenance of software environments.
The manual covers many interesting topics and Getting Started is a good entry point. Git repository of GNU Guix is hosted on Codeberg, you can reach the community via various communication channels as well.The LiveCDs includes proprietary firmwares from the Nonguix channel, you can get help for relevant topics from their communication channels ;)

For a decade I carried two iPhones: one personal, one for work. Neither ever felt at home in my Linux and BSD world.
Now it's a single Fairphone Gen6. Repairable with a screwdriver, 8 years of updates, separate work and personal profiles on one device, and it actually talks to my KDE desktop over KDE Connect.
Immich, Nextcloud, K-9 Mail, Tusky, KeePassDX, and finally GPG mail in my pocket. The camera is meh. Everything else is a clear win.

It's funny that the #CloudStrike blunder might have indirectly contributed to #Linux #game (anti-cheat) compatibility, with people like #RiotGames saying that they will follow #Microsoft/#Windows 's lead/security recommendations - even if it means their anti-cheat solution receding from the kernel space. #EA would probably follow suit too.

Fediversers do meu coração, preciso de ajuda.
Tem um tempinho que falei por aqui que ia aproveitar o Windows estar cagando meu note e prometendo cagar ainda mais pra migrar pro Linux.
Seguindo recomendações de vocês, estava entre o Zorin e Mint, mas fiquei com o Ubuntu verde mesmo.
Porém instalei o Stremio e ele funcionou por um tempo, depois a maioria dos add-ons de torrent sumiram (só no Mint, no Android logado na mesma conta não) e agora qualquer torrent que eu tente assistir dá 'Failed to fetch'.
Alguém tem ideia do que está acontecendo e como posso resolver?

I'm about to install #Linux for the first time ever!!! So excited. If I do this properly, I might submit it as a program to do for my local library (vs the library I work at, because I feel like it would be really well-received as a program run by a member of the community vs a staff librarian...? Maybe? idk)

Seems like #Linux has seen some significant (300%) growth since 2021. In that time, I've gone from using just #Windows + #ChromeOS to now running Linux (#Mint + #Ubuntu Cinnamon) my laptops.
