#JaneAusten 's earliest novel (by some measures; she bounced back and forth between edits on several of her novels, and this one was not published until after her death) is, while short, as delightful, funny, and psychologically acute as I'd expect from earlier reads of her more frequently adapted works. It is perhaps a little uneven, with a section parodying the Gothic novels of the day, though very funny, feeling a bit disconnected with the tone of the rest. John Thorpe is a memorable and completely plausible minor 'villain' whose blowhardish blusterings, unmoored from any necessary connection with truth, remains a sadly recognisable type, and the consequences of his lies and exaggerations are cleverly used to influence the plot. The naive main character Catherine is much less accomplished and intelligent than Austen's other protagonists, but is written so well that you can completely identify and sympathise with her, even as she also works as a comic character. @bookstodon #Bookstodon
