French painter, balloonist, army officer, and inventor Nicolas-Jacques Conté was born #OTD in 1755.
He is known for having invented the pencil as we still know it today, consisting of a graphite and clay lead inserted into a cedar wood body. Conté also contributed to the development of military balloons: he undertook various experiments to identify the alteration that hydrogen gas could produce in the envelope of aerostats.
