Los Angeles Lakers player and executive Jerry West died today at age 86. He was an Olympic gold winner and became a key figure in the NBA in many ways, not least as the inspiration for its logo. Designer Alan Siegel said he based the logo on a photo of West's perfect dribbling form. "It's the easiest job I ever had," Siegel told CNN Sports, which has the full story plus a tribute to West.

Actor Julian McMahon, who starred in "Nip/Tuck," "Charmed," and most recently on Netflix's "The Residence," playing the Australian prime minister, has died at age 56. “With an open heart, I wish to share with the world that my beloved husband, Julian McMahon, died peacefully this week after a valiant effort to overcome cancer,” his wife Kelly said in a statement to @Deadline.
