Re the Tim Cook stuff, I'm starting this new thread with a hashtag #disapplepointed so you can mute these posts if you're not interested.
I'm gonna document what I do/find out in case you also want to stop paying #Apple to store your data.
Our current monthly bill (not counting Applecare and third party app subscriptions) is €34.95. That's €420 per year.
That covers #iCloud storage and seamless syncing for our photos, files, contacts, calendar, notes... it also includes email hosting, and their other paid services for music, video, games and fitness.
There are alternatives out there. They might not be so convenient, they might need a couple of extra steps or third-party apps, but I'm not padding Tim Cook's pockets any more than I need to.
I need to keep SOME iCloud storage for backups but we can drop down to a lower-tier plan - the 200GB plan at €2.99 per month, or even the 50GB plan at 99c per month (can't share that plan, so really it would be €1.98).
€36 per year, worst case scenario. Ideally €24.
A minimum of €384 per year that Apple won't get from me any more.
