There's a widespread myth that medieval people used spices to cover up the taste of rotten meat.
The whole story traces back to one book. In 1939, a scientist named J.C. Drummond published The Englishman's Food and suggested that medieval recipes were so heavily spiced because the meat was frequently tainted. No evidence. Just an assumption. One sentence in one book published 85 years ago.

The largest impact event in Earth's recorded history, the Tunguska explosion occurred in the skies above Russia on June 30, 1908, causing massive destruction.
#OnThisDay, 25 Mar 1941, the first WRNS arrive at Bletchley Park in the UK. They operate the Bombe machines used for decoding German Enigma machine messages. Their work helps shorten World War 2.
At its peak, 75% of the workforce at Bletchley were women.

Monastère Mont G is a former Roman Catholic monastery. The impressive building was built around a century ago.
The architectural style is Neo-Gothic. The tall roof supports are decorated with Corinthian columns. The tall vaulted ceiling and supporting columns are made out of white and red sandstone. The red and white stones alternate to produce striped pattern. The pattern is oddly reminiscent, at least to me, of a candy cane 🍭

What we loved most about the hilltop towns in Italy was how much we could discover by walking their cobblestoned streets. And because many of the streets were narrow and winding, there were no cars, so we didn't have to jump to the side and hug the walls to avoid being hit.
We were free to wander, to stroll, to perambulate, and to discover something around every bend.

Medieval monks in Easter Ross – and not the Hebridean island of Iona – may have created the intricately decorated 1,200-year-old Book of Kells, according to researchers. A new project will explore the possibility it was created at a monastery in Portmahomack where there was a workshop turning animal hides into vellum.
