Very early #OnThisDay, 14 Aug 1943, Eliane Plewman parachutes into Nazi-occupied France to become a courier for the Special Operations Executive. The British SOE supported the French resistance. A courier would move messages and equipment between people.
Captured after 7 months, she was executed in Dachau in Sept 1944.

It is widely credited as kick-starting second wave feminism, and identified social expectations of femininity as a driver of women's unhappiness.

#OnThisDay, 19 Feb 1951, Egyptian activist Doria Shafik leads a crowd of 1,500 women onto the floor of the Egyptian parliament demanding equal rights for women.
As a result of her - and others' - activism, women were granted limited rights to vote in 1956. She spoke against the Nasser regime in 1957 and was placed under house arrest.
#OnThisDay, 20 Feb 1935, Danish-Norwegian Caroline Mikkelsen sets foot on Antarctica. She was the first woman documented to have landed on the continent when she stepped onto the Tryne Islands. Mount Caroline Mikkelsen is named after her.
Ingrid Christensen stepped foot on the Antarctic mainland in 1937.
#OnThisDay, 24 Feb 1968, Jocelyn Bell Burnell - along with her male supervisor and three other men - published a paper confirming the discovery of pulsars. She had built the array, picked up the signal and argued it was not an anomaly. Hewish received the Nobel prize for it in 1974: Bell Burnell did not.
In 2018 Bell Burnell received a £3m prize for her work. She's using it to set up a foundation to improve the diversity in STEM.
#OnThisDay, 28 Feb 1909, the first national Woman's Day is held in the USA. Suggested by Theresa Malkiel of the Socialist Party of America's Woman's National Committee, the idea is taken up in Europe and evolves into International Women's Day (normally 8 March).

Very early #OnThisDay, 29 Feb 1944, Madeleine Damerment parachuted into occupied France to be an agent for the British Special Operations Executive.
She was French, and had previously run escape lines for downed airmen. She escaped France in 1942, and then chose to return.
She was immediately arrested when she landed as the network had been betrayed. She was executed at Dachau in Sept 1944.
#OnThisDay, 13 Mar 1990, Ertha Pascal-Trouillot becomes the provisional president of Haiti, the first woman to hold the role.
She stabilised the country for long enough for it to hold a free and fair election.

Very early #OnThisDay, 6 Apr 1944, Lillian Rolfe and Violette Szabo separately arrive in occupied France to work for the British Special Operations Executive (SEO). Rolfe is a wireless operator, Szabo a courier.
Szabo returns to the UK at the end of April but goes back to France in June 1944 and is captured. Rolfe is captured in July 1944.
They are executed together, by shooting, in Ravensbrück concentration camp in Feb 1945.

#OnThisDay, 15 Apr 1960, Ella Baker convenes a conference of 126 independent student protest groups. The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) forms as a result. SNCC coordinated and assisted direct-action challenges to segregation in the USA.
Baker was a civil rights activist for five decades, and advocated grassroots activism. She also criticised the misogyny she encountered within the movement.
#OnThisDay, 16 Apr 1912, Harriet Quimby becomes the first woman to fly a plane across the English Channel.
Quimby was the first American woman to receive a pilot’s licence and made her living doing exhibition flights in the US. She also made money as the advertising face of a grape juice. She died in July 1912 when her plane pitched forward at 1,000 feet and she was thrown out.

#OnThisDay, 8 Jun 1944, Violette Szabo returns to occupied France by parachute for her second posting with the British Special Operations Executive.
She is captured two days later, after a gun battle. She's tortured and sent to Ravensbrück concentration camp. She is killed in Jan 1945. Her daughter Tania received the George Cross on her behalf in 1947.
Violette Szabo's story was filmed as Carve Her Name With Pride (1958).

The 1,700 Jews of Rhodes were deported to Auschwitz 80 years ago, when Allied victory was almost in sight.
Their fate reflects how genocide remained a Nazi priority to the bitter end.
