There is a volunteer tomato plant growing in my wildflower garden. I've never grown tomatoes in that space. I'm letting it stay. Maybe it will be productive, but it will have to outcompete the nearby purple coneflowers that are reaching maturation. (photo attached)

Finally got around to visiting the gardens of my local National Trust property, Llanerchaeron, yesterday. The walled gardens are inspiring. Not that I can aspire to having a walled garden but there are some great ideas for planting combinations, techniques for growing fruit and veg etc. and a cutting garden I can only dream of but maybe could replicate on a very small scale. I also came over all emotional. It was so beautiful.

This is the second season of my mini wildflower meadow on our front yard extension. It used to be just weeds and now it's covered in flowers. My neighbors thought I was crazy but now they are very complimentary.

The focus is on a single Indian Blanket Flower (Gaillardia pulchella) with red petals that are ringed in bright yellow, and a red and yellow center. There are more growing elsewhere in the mini meadow.

I think this is False Sunflower (Heliopsis helianthoides), as identified by the iNaturalist Seek app. It is over 6 feet tall and has taken over the mini meadow this year. It did not make any appearance last summer.

Yay! I have newts in my little pond! Just caught a glimpse but almost certainly a male and female palmated newts.
I need to let the water clear before I replant then keep the planting cut back enough that their tadpoles will thrive.
This spring I found a fully grown frog tadpole when cleaning out which means it was suffering from neotony, probably to the pond being choked with weeds.
But now I have newts! 😎

Dear Masto Garden Gnomes:
I think I need to prune this Bay Laurel tree. I'd like it to stay compact. But I have this thing about not topping trees. I'm just not sure how to prune it. It's getting too wide AND tall. It's probably 2 meters high. Any advice would be appreciated. Picture below with golden retriever for scale.

Some more green for your feed. Spent a few hours in the greenhouses yesterday doing some cleanup and shifting herbs and flowers from start trays to pottles where they will overwinter before heading outdoors.

Pretty much closed loop sufficient for nearly all of our edible, medicinal, bee fodder, and even some amenity herbs and flowers. Between collecting seed and encouraging volunteerism we try to keep fodder in borders and marginal growing spaces as much of the year as possible for our apian allies. Be #bee friendly!

A second/third crop of figs is going hard in the greenhouse. With a suss baseline climate region plus violent climate change, our large diy stick built with cheap 3rd grade mostly unwanted untreated timber greenhouses allow us to have consistent citrus, figs and olives, salads and more seed starting time.

The tobacco is flowering loud and proud, and so should we.

Stay vertical and garden hard!

Good news! As of yesterday our garden has a full five bars of WiFi again.

Bit of our lawn. For the first cut of the years I mowed some stripes (so insects etc don't end up in a desert). Realised they resemble a signal strength icon.

In a couple weeks I'll cut the rest (and leave the stripes). For most of the season I'll just cut some paths and leave the rest alone.
