It is my personal and professional opinion, not to fund or further trust the Starkey Development.
I am out 1,000 bucks and that is my own doing. My fault. My stupidity.
But the development may be toxic with some not so nice individuals. The software, I like. You're likely using the software too (It's good, isn't it? I think so). But I do believe there are some toxic people you may not want to be associated within the development.

Another 45 FOSS projects have been selected for the #NGI0 Commons Fund. We want to thank the project teams for their contribution to a free and open internet. In a world increasingly in the grip of proprietary technologies and those who control them, we are proud to be supporting people who choose to work on the digital commons: shared digital assets that serve not the few but the many.
Come over to read what each project is working on.

Hoping to keep this up and contribute much.

Do you hate #broligarchs?
#Billionaires? #AiSlop but still think there is merit in #AI?
Here is my proposal for a stand alone.
OFFGRID COMMUNITY AI SYSTEM.
That's right.Your very own co-op AI
The calculations are very much back of the envelope, first cut, but quite feasible.
A 32billion parameters, frontier level performance compatable open source #llm model. The power requirements is that of 3AC units including cooling. Serves 15-20 concurrent users. 40 households of 4 people each (taking into account actual AI model distributed use metrics and contention ratios)
40 households, subscribing at $30/month over 2 years + power (solar). Train with your own datasets.
Entire set up takes half a rack.
LETS GO!!!

The rise of Mastodon has made me so much more aware of government services requiring us to use private companies’ systems to communicate with them and access services.
Sitting on a Dutch train just now I was shown on a screen “feeling unsafe in the train? Contact us via WhatsApp”.
What if I don’t use WhatsApp? (I do, but I wish I didn’t have to) I’m forced to share my data with Meta to use it.
Public systems should not require use of private services.

Hello dear Fediversers,
My students want to improve their home lab backups and have come up with the idea of storing their offsite backups with each other instead of in the cloud.
My question is, does anyone know of any software or solutions for this? It doesn't have to be open source, but it would be best if it were. The option to encrypt the backups is not essential, but would be preferable.
Please boost.
Many thanks for any tips.
Friction's expression system allows for advanced noise formula, which can easily be combined with simple maths to give a stepped noise, changing only every n frames, here's how !

Currently writing a self-hosting guide for newbies, showing off the beauty and ease of #YunoHost.
Part 1 was really popular - beyond my expectations - with 1500+ unique visitors. Thank you!
For reference:
Part 2 (step-by-step installation and post-installation) will be super visual. I tried to keep things simple but I still have 27 - yes TWENTY-SEVEN - screenshots. I'll keep #AltText relevant to each step on a need to know basis or else it will turn into a novel... and will be too overwhelming for people using screen readers.
Aiming to get it published by Wednesday AKA the one year anniversary of the start of my own self-hosting adventures with YunoHost.
This is the guide I wish I had had back in the day... I would have started A LOT sooner. I'm basically writing it to my old self, hoping it will be useful for others 🥹
PSA: if you're using YunoHost please consider donating to them, to keep the project healthy and long-lasting (it's run by a team of volunteers, maintaining hundreds of apps): https://donate.yunohost.org
"Politics" isn't only about institutions. It's about organizing large numbers of people to do something they wouldn't otherwise do. Corporations organize large numbers of people to do things they probably wouldn't do if they weren't paid and/or didn't need the money to live. 10,000 people wouldn't spontaneously get together and spend the best hours of their days for months building a commercial jet airliner if there weren't corporate structures in place and a society that keeps them close enough to deprivation that they will do this in exchange for money.

thinking about foss stuff, and I know I've groused about licensing stuff before, and how I feel like my only way out is to just Parity7 everything and fall into obscurity but...
...I think we need a different movement around open source, with new terminology, that clarifies the intent and opens doors to more pro-social behavior and capabilities (up to and including the potential for "ethical licensing").
I've been spitballing the terms Common Software and Community Software. The core idea is that things that count as Community/Common Software can't enter the realm of the proprietary (so, strong copyleft a-la AGPL and Parity, virality not necessary). What's the difference from "Free Software"? We get rid of "freedom zero", aka "the freedom to run software for any purpose". Common Software licenses may have Non-Commercial clauses, Anti-Particular-Industry clauses (such as anti-MIC stuff), etc.
I think "freedom zero" was a grave mistake. I get where it came from--a desire to remove discrimination--but what it resulted in was a hijacking of Free Software by the corporate "Open Source" wing to exploit an otherwise healthy community of people openly sharing their creations... for an enormous profit that we can't even quantify right now.
We need a strong return to copyleft, and we need to gather together and grow its existing ecosystem, away from the MIT/BSD poison that our world has turned towards.
Your thoughts are welcome on this. I want to have a conversation about this stuff and maybe eventually record all this in a longer-form blog post. If you know folks who have had similar thoughts please link them so we can chat, too.
UPDATE: I've sketched out an initial conclusion based on today's discussion over at https://toot.cat/@zkat/115852520380684438
One thing people often miss is continuity.
Slackware isn’t just technically stable , it’s culturally stable.
The same person, Patrick Volkerding, has guided it for 30 years with the same philosophy: don’t change things unless there’s a real reason.
For many users, that long-term trust matters more than new features.
You know what Slackware will be next year, and that’s rare today.

Have you ever wanted to have Theo de Raadt give you his fortune in your GNU Emacs session? I made a package some time ago which serves exactly this purpose. You can find the package, as well as it's history on Codeberg with the following link. It is currently my only Emacs package, but I plan to make more when it becomes useful to.
https://codeberg.org/amadaluzia/theo.el
Appending to the history after the package was published onto Codeberg, I ended up in a call where me and @izder456 were talking about theo.el. I believe in that call, it was also reposted in the OpenBSD room on Matrix. I also was suggested to put it on MELPA, so that is exactly what I did.
After creating the pull request and fixing all of the issues that stopped it from being pushed into MELPA, it couldn't make it on as it was a pretty repetitive package, and there were about 5 other `fortune`-esque packages with much more customisability. However, I now have a better package because of MELPA's guidelines, and I believe that I can still give attention to the package, even if not through MELPA.
That's why I wanted to talk about it here, because maybe you are interested in having a fortune package for your GNU Emacs. If so, and assuming you have straight.el, you can simply copy the following snippet into your init.el. After that, you should have it installed.
https://gist.github.com/amadaluzia/be96e325326a9d66619543af410e4bf4
Let me know how the package goes for you. I would love to improve the GNU Emacs ecosystem further, as a GNU Emacs user.
