it's good to hear that there's a new instance on fedi with a healthy number of users, but gods, I hope they figured out how to increase their character limit from 500 to something a bit more reasonable

“I feel like we're rebooting to the last version of the Internet that I felt uncomplicated joy about.”
@Casey, @kevin and @pj on why they set up their Forkiverse fediverse server.

If you have seen this strange hashtag #forkiverse it’s a bunch of people joining a server run by some big podcasts. It seems to have gotten a lot of activity because they just featured it in a podcast episode. Here’s the link to the episode.
Welcome, everyone joining the #forkiverse!
The #fediverse is like any social media in that the "algorithm" gets better the more you "train" it. And by "algorithm" I mean cool people & hashtags you can follow (yes, you can follow hashtags, it's awesome!), and by "train" it I mean boost any post you enjoy.
The more you boost and others boost, the more good stuff bubbles to the top and even goes viral. (Yes, stuff on Mastodon etc. can go viral! It's possible!)
Most importantly: HAVE FUN!! 😊🎉
I'm not super sure what's up with that Search Engine podcast or that #forkiverse tag, but I, for one, welcome the new denizens of the fediverse. Hello hello 👋
Hot tips:
- fill in your profiles with at least *some*content (doesn't have to be complex or a lot!) That tells other users you're not a bot.
- post an #introduction, as many of you have been doing 🤘
- follow hashtags and users that look interesting to you! There is no algorithm. The algorithm is you - and boosting!
Okay, can someone explain what the heck a #forkiverse is? That hashtag is all over the damn place, and I can see some folks from an instance of that name showing up.
Is it just a new instance? Is it a metaphor? A meme? Some sort of viral campaign to create new words specifically designed to grate on Owlbear nerves?
Hard Fork / Search Engine reports 4000 sign-ups for their #forkiverse instance in the first week. HF already has a Discord server for paid subscribers. Curious to see how these two spaces interact. Here's the episode with updates: https://www.nytimes.com/column/hard-fork
@caseynewton thanks for pushing the #fediverse with your #forkiverse - You guys already transformed +6000 listeners! "Dankeschön" from south germany

The #forkiverse seems like a good model for expanding the fediverse: instances based on existing audiences.
Hear me out. Fanbases have an automatic sense of community. They are more likely to be politically/culturally similar. Users already like the admin (e.g. the podcast host). The admin can’t be a tyrant, because the users are also their audience.
And there’s that last hard-to-describe ingredient. That sense of energy and momentum. “Hey, come join, we’re starting something together!”
I've decided to follow some of the #forkiverse people hoping they follow back.I feel like they need more integration.
I hope I don't regret this.
Brilliant cartoon in The Guardian by the very talented Fiona Katsauskas: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/picture/2026/jan/15/why-are-so-many-still-sticking-with-twitter
"So he lies constantly, fosters a toxic environment, and openly created sexually explicit deep fakes. Do you ever wonder why you're still in a relationship with your X?"
