About twenty cats entered and sat round the fire, holding up their paws and warming themselves. One went to the window, put a black cap on its head, cried “Hurrah for London!” and vanished. The other cats, one by one, did the same. The cap of the last fell off, and the shepherd caught it, put it on his own head, cried “Hurrah for London!” and followed. He reached London in a twinkling, and with his companions went to drink wine in a cellar. He got drunk and fell asleep. In the morning he was caught, taken before a judge, and sentenced to be hanged. At the gallows he entreated to be allowed to wear the cap he had on in the cellar; it was a present from his mother, and he would like to die with it on. When it came the rope was round his neck. He clapped the cap on his head, and cried “Hurrah for Kintail!” He disappeared with the gallows about his neck, and his friends in Kintail, having by this time missed him, and being assembled in the bothy prior to searching the hills, were much surprised at his strange appearance.

Rated Bilal: A New Breed of Hero 4/10

This was really disappointing. There are definitely moments of brilliant direction, stunning character design, and impressive uses of the score and soundtrack, but the script needed a lot more polish. For the entire film there wasn't a single character that I felt I could latch on to and it made this viewing a slog. (I actually fell asleep during the first 40 minutes on my first viewing.) This movie is easily half an hour longer than it needs to be and I still don't have a clear understanding of why--not everything that was included needed to be and the film's plot turns feel as though they are pilfering pretty unabashedly from THE PRINCE OF EGYPT. I really like films in this genre, especially when animated, so this, while not awful, was definitely a letdown.

I present to you the Bronze Age standing stone, known as Queen's Stone.

Excavated in 1926 by Alfred Watkins (of Ley Lines fame), twice as much lies buried beneath the ground.

It sits alone in a huge bend of the River Wye, near Symonds Yat.

And the strangest thing about it? There appears to be no surviving folklore about this remarkable stone 🤷🏼‍♀️

Mollie Hunter (1922–2012) was born #OTD, 30 June. Although she produced work for all ages she is best remembered as a writer of fantasy & historical fiction for children & YAs. She received numerous awards including the New York Times Outstanding Books of the Year Award, the Boston Globe Horn Book Award & the Carnegie Medal.

We are come in a stone boat,
a miracle ship that steers itself
round skerries where guillemots
and shags stand still as graves.
Our sealskin cloaks are clasped
by a fist-sized penannular brooch,
our slippers are feathery
gugas’ necks: so delicate
we carried them over the wracky shore,
past several rusted tractors. Truth:
this was a poor place, a
ragged land all worn to holes. No one,
nothing, but a distant
Telecom van, a bungalow
tied with fishing floats
for want of flowers.
That August night
the Perseid shower rained
on moor and lily-loch, on a frightened world –
on us, in a roofless shieling

the justice harp; what folks expect.
We took swans’ shape
to cross the Minch, one last fling
with silly magic – at our first
mainland steps a dormobile
slewed into a passing place; cameras flashed.
So we stayed high, surprised
a forester making aeolian flutes
from plastic tubes,
he shared his pay. ‘Avoid
the A9. For God’s sake,
get some proper clothes.” We ditched
the cloaks, bought yellow
Pringle sweaters in Spean Bridge,
and house by safe house
arrived in Edinburgh. So far so
tedious: we all hold
minor government jobs, lay plans, and bide our time.
