Anyone have the TL;DR; on self hosted fediverse software?
Mastodon vs Snac vs Pleroma vs ?
I'm looking for something that is super low maintenance and lightweight / easy on resources but as full featured as practical within those constraints.
Something easy to tune re: post lengths and media types would be cool too. A "text first" platform is desired.
I've run Mastodon in the past and it's like fishing with nukes for this use case.
What's out there?

The latest philosophize this on Sloterdijk’s anthropotechnics got me thinking of how there’s a direct line between me moving to the fediverse to andopting other practices like self hosting and the such.
The fediverse is not just some technology or communication tool, but it’s a tool whose constraints train people on self governance, voluntary coexistence, and alternatives to big tech.
It’s a better lens for me when comparing eg. ActivityPub vs Atproto. It’s not just about the technology, but the practices and culture it fosters, and ultimately the reason I prefer sticking around here.

One thing I keep coming back to when comparing #ActivityPub and AT Protocol: ActivityPub is basically a convention on top of the #web stuff we already have. An actor is a JSON-LD document you GET. An inbox is an endpoint you POST to. If you already run a website, you can bolt this on without changing the site's basic shape. Ghost didn't set out to join the #fediverse, and then years later it could, just by adding an endpoint.
AT Protocol feels less like that to me. Running a PDS means a signed repo, a Merkle search tree, a firehose, a DID. It's not a layer you add to an existing site. It's closer to standing up another backend beside it.
I think that's why ActivityPub keeps making sense to me. You can join later. You don't have to have built the whole thing with federation in mind from day one.

Another cool thing about the #Fediverse:
IF (most likely NOT gonna happen) a major instance or smaller ones would be sold to whatever evil entity that wants to use it to influence our network…
…most of the rest of the Fediverse would simply block them and local users migrate to a different instance for example

#FediHood and #HolosSocial, two separate #Fediverse projects (that I maintain), can now send each other #E2EE DMs, fully over #ActivityPub.
I've been thinking about an emerging issue here on the #Fediverse, and I would like to suggest we solve it collaboratively.
Issue
Civilians in #Gaza are trying to provide food, medical treatment, and basic necessities for their families. They can't see upfront who would be willing to support them here on the #Fediverse. They can't stay silent either, just watching their kids and vulnerable family members suffer.
So they add long lists of recipients to their posts, and maybe also sent direct messages to a long list of people.
Some recipients feel helpless, because they're already donating. Some people get upset because they do not want to receive a stream of direct messages.
Suggestion
Let's use a ""#hashtag" (to be determined):
1) When you post a call for donations, write it without a long list of recipients, so everybody reading feels addressed by it.
Include the "#hashtag", to encourage boosts.
2) When you're willing to support civilians in Gaza who are in need, subscribe to the ""#hashtag".
No need to boost all of the posts you will see. If we are many, each of us boosting a single post a day will spread the message. If you don't think a post is a genuine call for help, just don't boost it. If you see malicious abuse of the hashtag, to harm its efficiency, report the abusers.
3) Whoever doesn't want to see the "#hashtag" can filter it.
Does that sound reasonable?
If you think this is a reasonable approach, please favorite and boost. Optionally reply with a "#hashtag" suggestion that:
- Signals respect for people and institutions in need
- Makes it clear it's about aid and donations for people and humanitarian institutions on the ground (not just generically about Gaza)
- Suggests boosts are also a form of help, if one can't donate (more)
I'll collect all suggestions from the replies on Thursday Aug 13th midnight UTC, and post a vote listing all of them, that will run for another week, to determine the most favorited one.
