Started laying out a rough plan for implementing FEP-ef61: Portable Objects in #Fedify—server-independent #ActivityPub identities backed by #DIDs, multi-server replication, and client-side signing. It's going to be a long road (13 tasks across 5 phases, with a few open questions that need answering before we even begin), but I think it's worth doing right.

As Mastodon and other services grow, take the time to learn how to “verify” yourself. It’s simple: add a link to your profile page, then add a rel=me link to the headers of your website, linking back to your Mastodon profile. It shows a checkmark on your link, and can help other users verify that you are who you say you are

Fediverse & AI Coding Tools & Vibe Coding

...

I noticed 2 or 3 people lately using AI coding tools to create Fediverse software.

2 of them even seemed to be Vibe Coding.

...

I have been programming for over 30 years. I am probably not going to Vibe Code, but —

I wonder if we should help them.

There are tools we (Fediverse developers) could create to make it so others could Vibe Code Fediverse apps.

I don't know about other filmmakers or content creators, but I have never seen a dime from YouTube. Even when I pushed out regular content filming live events, even when I had huge numbers of followers and views, the only thing I ever got from YouTube was a bunch of nasty comments.

But unless they use ad-block, every person watching my videos sees ads they don't want for things they don't want. Google is making bank off my work, and I just want people to see it.

If you're like me, consider switching to a reputable #PeerTube instance that federates like @BTFree or @MakerTube

Be like Mike. Sing up. Add your content. Follow, share links, and subscribe to real people making real content on the #fediverse

I think that there is a real case for developing a #webcomics platform for the #fediverse. I am going to start trying to make this, but my dev skills are 20 years old at best. I need all kinds of help from #developers and #designer. If other people want to see this happen, please let me know.

A Crowdsourced Photo Gallery from the Fediverse – the Open Social Web in action

Here are some nice photos from around the fediverse: https://home.scoobysnack.net/gallery/. That page updates automatically as new photos are posted.

How did they get there? Well…

People from all over Mastodon, Pixelfed, Lemmy and more posted photos into these communities:

https://piefed.social/c/photography

https://lemmy.world/c/photography

https://lemmy.world/c/japanpics

… and a few others. Moderators curate those communities to filter out anything obnoxious and people upvote the best ones.

Jerry used his PieFed account to create a “Feed” of 6 photography communities at https://feddit.online/f/photos. In PieFed a Feed is a bundle of communities with all their content shown together in a list. Those communities can be on any Lemmy, PieFed or Mbin instance. In the sidebar you can see all the communities in the Feed. That feed can be Followed, just like an account on Mastodon can be.

Someone on https://piefed.social followed ~photos@feddit.online (the ~ distinguishes it from a person, which uses @ at the start) which created this: https://piefed.social/f/photos@feddit.online. (Following a feed automatically subscribes one to all the communities within and if Jerry adds a new community to the feed all the subscribers auto-follow the new community. But I digress).

The author of home.scoobysnack.net looked up PieFed’s API spec and wrote some JavaScript which uses PieFed’s API to retrieve all the photos in the feed on piefed.social:

GET https://piefed.social/api/alpha/post/list?feed_id=47&limit=40&page=1&nsfw=Exclude&minimum_upvotes=0

… and finally their JavaScript displays the images.

So the journey these photos took went through 6 steps:

Mastodon / PixelFed / author -> Lemmy / PieFed / Mbin communities -> Feddit.online feed -> PieFed.social feed -> PieFed.social API -> home.scoobysnack.net

I think that’s pretty cool.

Once upon a time, I was very active on MySpace and then Facebook. Then things got really shitty, so I quit and joined BlueSky.

I felt horrible, like the smallest bit of the code, unrecognized, shouting into the void for robots and scammers. But it a good place, right? And then they banned trans people while bringing in the authoritarians.

So, I thought all social media is bad, and I should try and get a website going where I could shout at the void on my own space.

I came across @_elena and started playing around with PeerTube. I saw @firesidefedi talking about exciting things, connecting with real people, and rebuilding that good time I used to have being online.

It was exciting, but I wasn't sure. And then @TIBtv came on, and I was blown away. My people! There they are!

I hope other people like me quit lurking quietly and join in. It's fantastic here on the #fediverse
