fedihood
#FediHood is in beta and the core is there, with more of you joining to talk with people near you, fully over #ActivityPub.
Pick your location and the app notices when a town is too small and suggests a larger one nearby, so you stay at city level, never exact coordinates. DMs are end-to-end encrypted and push notifications work.
A project like this only grows if the people using it carry it, so share it if you want it to exist.
Thank you for your support
Concerning #FediHood, the verification email contains only a few words with a link carrying the token.
Unfortunately, this makes the email get rejected as spam by some providers. I neglected that part, having tested with only three providers. Sorry about that.
#FediHood keeps growing, and many bugs have been fixed thanks to your feedback.
Federation now works smoothly over #ActivityPub. The Nearby and Discover timelines work as intended, and push notifications are available. #E2EE still needs work to support several browsers or devices.
It is a good start. You can join this new fediverse software at https://fedihood.social

Tom, the creator of @apps and @HolosSocial has started a new project:
It's called Fedihood
https://FediHood.social
It connects people by location, and topic, so you can find people near you by topic.
You can find me there too: @joergi
We are now more than 300 users on #FediHood. The project is stable enough for me to invite you to try it.
It is a software running on #ActivityPub and using #OSM.
The idea? Discover people near you or all around the world, and filter by topic.
It doesn't use GPS, you pick the town. The app warns you if your city is too small and suggests a bigger one nearby. Bonus: it supports #E2EE DMs.
Don't hesitate to share. Thank you!
#FediHood supports custom emojis, but I think people should be able to import their own (limited to around 10) and only usable by them.
I will add another tab in the emoji picker to quickly find them.
For devs who build apps on the #Mastodon API, I have started to document the dedicated endpoints for #FediHood. The common Mastodon endpoints are already supported.
https://fedihood.social/api-docs
Of course, these will be added to #Fedilab
The domain fedihood.social is flagged as dangerous by Bitdefender, which may be the reason why confirmation emails are being rejected as spam by some providers.
I registered the domain on August 7th, and this false positive is causing a lot of problems. #FediHood
I published a small about page for #FediHood
I added a note about LLM usage in the #FediHood README, and I also made things clearer in the contributing guide. Using an LLM is OK as long as a human reviews the code and fully understands what it does. No vibe-coding.
Being transparent matters on a project, to avoid disappointing people who contributed.
#Fedihood is growing and I'd like to add a few topics. Which ones would you use? Multiple answers allowed. If something is missing, tell me in the replies.
Options: (choose one or more)
There are now more than 700 users on #FediHood, and I've added new topics.
You can tailor your timeline in three ways:
- The distance from your city
- The topics you want to see
- The languages
Topics are more powerful than hashtags (in the context of the project) because:
- They avoid typos
- They work whatever the language
- One mute covers everything, unlike hashtag variants
It also fully supports the #ActivityPub Events used by #Mobilizon.

#FediHood now lets you sign up and log in with your #Mastodon account. It only uses the minimal API scope "read:accounts", and the token is immediately revoked. Your Mastodon identity is never shown nor federated.
Without an account, the app suggests a handle and you pick a city, no email and no password to manage. With an existing account, you can link your Mastodon account to it, and each Mastodon account can only be linked once.
I don't know if #FediHood will be adopted by the #Fediverse community, but I am still doing my best for it. Three new features have been added:
- Emoji reactions to messages (federated)
- Theme customization (with presets available)
- An option to automatically delete your own posts
FediHood lets you build timelines based on people near you and on topics. More: https://fedihood.social/about
