Oh, it's also #FediforumFriday which reminds me that folks should check out talks from #Fedicon a couple of weekends ago! and also, get tickets for the next #Fediforum coming up in October. https://fediforum.org/news/2025-08-06-fediforum-fall-announced/
fediforum
#FediForum is a wrap. It was chock full of fedi goodness. I expect to be still be talking about some of the content .6 FediForums from today.
At #FediForum, @n00q discussed a Federated music service for #BandCamp refugees. After a few days of drawing up requirements and specs, and a couple days of code, something interesting is taking shape.
Here's a too-fast-tour of a hypothetical album page built with #Emissary. Custom skins, uploads, and transcoding music is still TBD, but so far this feels like magic.
Bands' profiles will be native citizens of the Fediverse to like, share, and comment. Excited yet?
Excited to announce that I will be at #fediforum today speed demo-ing my latest project: an ActivityPub data observatory!
This observatory does not collect any user data or metadata. Instead I am looking at the *shape* (aka schema) of data being sent around the fediverse. This will let software devs ask questions like "How is a Mastodon 4.2.0 image post formatted differently from a Misskey 2024.7.0 image post?"
And we'll get real answers based on data rather than on poor documentation.
We're very happy to announce the very first keynote at #FediForum, ever, by nobody other than science fiction author, activist and journalist extraordinaire Cory Doctorow.
Cory will join us on the first day of FediForum, June 5, to set the context and stage for the energetic and substantive discussions that are sure to follow on how, together, we can and will create the world we all want to live in, on the Open Social Web and beyond.

Remember when the web was fun? @cwebber does, and she reminded users of that in her keynote speech at last week's FediForum, in which she talked about how the fediverse can't succeed without joy. Here's @ricmac's writeup of the event, which included presentations from @_elena, @quillmatiq, @mike, @michael, @benpate and more.
I'm so excited for #Fediforum on Tuesday & Wednesday!
Excited to be collaborating with this incredible group of people to advise @fediforum and help push the #SocialWeb and #Fediverse forward.
See you at #FediForum (June 5-7, online)!

Here's my writeup of #FediForum, in which I ask the question: is the fediverse making meaningful progress vs. centralized platforms? The post includes @_elena's excellent video and has discussion of @cwebber's presentation, Bounce (by @quillmatiq & @snarfed.org), Surf (by @mike & @marci), Channels.org (by @michael & @newsmast team), & Bandwagon (by @benpate). Thx also @j12t & @anca for FediForum. The headline is via Christine: "we can’t succeed without joy." https://thenewstack.io/bringing-joy-back-to-the-web-fediverse-vs-centralized-apps/
Dear Fedi friends,
I'm really proud to share with you a video I made: "Introducing the Fediverse: a New Era of Social Media" https://news.elenarossini.com/fediverse-video/
In this 4-minute video I explain what the #fediverse is to people not familiar with it, mentioning some of its great features and benefits (interoperability, no ads, no surveillance...) and I set it in contrast to the world of Big Tech social platforms. I argue that, with the rise of Big Tech oligarchs and the current political climate, there has never been a better time to join the fediverse.
I hope you will enjoy this video and that you will find it useful (maybe as a tool to introduce your friends, family, colleagues, school administrators, local government officials to it).
The fediverse has truly changed my life, making me a better, more empowered digital citizen. I am endlessly grateful for it, so this is my contribution to the cause ❤️
I am also incredibly thankful for the work of @samaaberg and @patel.riyen who helped me bring my vision to life with their amazing cinematography skills and their assistance throughout the process, providing brilliant feedback to the script / edits from the POV of fedi newbies.
And I was also moved by the generous help of people of the Fediverse who volunteered to translate the script into many foreign languages: @jan @fritjof @erikkemp @sknob @severin @clabru @tarcisiosurdi @hongminhee @danielcasanueva @ainali @nacly
Lastly, I'm thankful for the opportunity I had to premiere the video last week at #FediForum - thank you @j12t and @anca
The video is up on my self-hosted PeerTube instance (thank you @yunohost) and for now it is unlisted as I have no idea how my VPS will hold up. I also included an alternate location in the blog post.
I hope you'll enjoy it! It's been a real labor of love (a month of full time work on it)... I see it as my love letter to the fediverse 💌
Edit/update: THANK YOU for all the people who volunteered to have their avatar show up in the last shot. There were 750+ submissions and only 135 spots - sorry I couldn't include everyone 🥲

Letting the cat out of the bag:
My Fediverse promo video will premiere at #FediForum on Friday, right after @cwebber's keynote. I'm SOOO EXCITED!!! And honored beyond words.
I just had the opportunity to do a test of the tech during @fediforum's meet & greet and I was thrilled to see so many familiar faces! I'm really moved by everyone's support. Thank you @ozoned @tommi @sturmsucht @reiver @alexisbushnell @anca and ESPECIALLY @j12t for this incredible opportunity. I LOVE this community ❤️
In the kickoff for #fediforum. It's happening!
I only had a few fleeting moments to catch the #FediForum today. But wow was I so glad to have been there!
@_elena premiered a new video that introduces the fediverse to mainstream social users, and it was very well produced. I got a little emotional about it! I believe it will be released on PeerTube within the week.
Something to look forward to, and share generously. You'll want to shake the cobwebs off your old Twitter and Facebook accounts and post it! :)
So after writing this up - it's obvious that customizing your timeline is a top trend in fediverse dev circles right now! Curious what will see in the upcoming demos as well.
Day 1 of FediForum - Demo Summary Thread
Bounce is a new offering from @anewsocial that allows you to move accounts across platforms (Bluesky <---> Mastodon) including ALL of your followers and many of your followed accounts.

#FediForum premiere for my Fediverse promo film = done.
How did it go? So well that I've been fighting back tears for the past half hour.
Getting such warm, positive comments from builders and champions of the fediverse is EVERYTHING ❤️ Thank you @j12t for this opportunity.
I'm almost tempted to "deploy on a Friday" and share the link to the video now 😅 But nah, I know better. Tuesday it is! (Monday is a public holiday here)
Have a lovely weekend everyone!
The recordings of the keynotes, and the movie premiere, from FediForum June 2025 are now online.

In exciting #FediForumFriday news that technically was last Friday but it was so close to the wire I'm sharing anyway, @fediforum got their keynotes and demos uploaded along with the notes from June's #FediForum so you can go and check out all the amazing things that happened there for free: https://fediforum.org/2025-06/ .
It's #FediForumFriday- your reminder to check in with projects you're excited about, ask for or offer help, or just chat with the folks you met and refresh the joy and motivation you felt at #FediForum.
🧵
The world needs a secure, open source alternative to Facebook private posting (i.e. to friends only), but nothing on the fediverse really fills the need today, alas. At the Fediforum in June, I gave a short presentation on FriendSafe, a social media system I've written that supports private posting. It's a proof of concept that works today, but it would need major UX work and a security review before it's really ready for widespread use. It has a few other features I haven't seen in other social media yet, and which I'd love to see added to other projects.
In this thread is that 10-slide presentation, one slide per post. The text in the slides is the same as the text in the posts. The presentation is focused on FriendSafe, but I'm also just trying to get these ideas out there.
Let's start a conversation. Specifically, how can we move forward to get secure private posting ASAP, with full mobile support, etc.? I think this is critical to let people exit FB.
Sneaking in a quick #FediforumFriday post! I’m really interested in https://wanderer.to/ which is a trails database / app that federates. Would be great to have them demo at a future #Fediforum 🤞🏻
So much talk at #FediForum about local communities, and self-publishers.
I curate two maps, one for local- or language-centric fedi communities, and another for organisations who self-host and self-publish on ActivityPub.
I am always open to suggestions for additions!
