TL; DR - yes, you are in the right place. and if you're not sure about the server you can change that later
every time there's a new wave of people looking for a home because of the insane fascist baby Space Karen I think back to when I first signed up on the main, original instance. this was March '22.
at the time I was signing up for everything:
counter social
spoutible
mastodon (part of the fediverse. you are here)
and eventually blue sky (when I was "lucky" to "get an invite")
threads was not a thing and by the time it was I had figured out the rest of this post.
anyway.. this seemed a quiet, foreign place.
it felt slow, clunky. maybe stale?
some of the other options seemed quite appealing
it took a while to figure out none of them were truly viable. and this place positively BLOOMS if you put the time in and are patient 🔥
none of them offered what we have here. real federation. real empowerment of the users. real organic interactions. and the people are the best part.
this is the only one that isn't controlled by a central entity - Twitter backer, malign billionaire, super weird VC.. or just some singular (probable) narcissist., who you better not piss off.. or else..
so if you're in this situation my advice is simple:
by all means create some of those other accounts but don't give up on this place just because it seems slow at first. remember you ARE the algorithm. and you won't lose everything because you can migrate.
ask for advice. go slow. build the network you want. you get to keep it!
and welcome to the FEDI 🤩🧀 and.. goodnight 😴

明快打字机的前世今生 
我一定要造一部打字机，使我可以真正的打字

今天突然看到何同学在YouTube上2025年10月14日发布的视频，这个视频其实在2023年就看过了，在今天又遇见，仿佛在看一个全新的视频一样。
我找到了明快打字机的专利网站：patents.google.com
三级滚筒系统
大油桶上装着6个中滚筒，每个中滚筒装着6个小滚筒，就如图3所示（图三、图四）
每个小滚筒有八面
每面上又有20个字模（图5），而明快是29个字模（图6明确数出来了确实是29）
所以明快可以打出668*29=8352个字模
魔眼装置
要打“呼”字，先打“口”再打“竖钩”，然后就会到小滚筒的某一节上，前面说了每个小滚筒有八面，所以一般有八个有“口”有“竖钩”的汉字，（所以我觉得6629*8=8352更符合直觉）这使用了林语堂自己发明的”上下型检字法“（图8）
我觉得更奇妙的是还有个预览滚筒（图7）
大滚筒上处于打印位置的八个字；
就是预览滚筒上被放大的八个字；
然后按键盘下的”87651234“8个按键中的一个，就可以选择正确的字。
声旁+形旁
8352个字模里，有7000左右是可以直接打出来的，剩下的是偏旁（70声旁+1300个形旁）
比如情，通过打声旁”竖心旁“和形旁”青“
所以这样就可以很轻松的通过组合打出字！甚至可以打出生僻字，自创汉字！
猜, 睛, 精, 倩, 清, 请, 晴, 情，等等等等
所以经过简单排列组合就是70X1300=91000个字

这台打字机能够打9万个字，解决了汉字数量多的问题。它通过三级滚筒结构和上下行检字法实现。(视频中期主题）

按照reddit的说法：
这台打字机是纳尔逊·费利克斯在他妻子祖父家的地下室里发现的，他首先将其发布到了一个 Facebook 群组中。
明快打字机是第一台使用键盘的中文打字机。它由林语堂发明，于1947年5月22日首次生产。它是当时速度最快的中文打字机，熟练的打字员平均每分钟可以打出约50个字，即使是未经训练的用户也能达到每分钟20个字的速度。
林德森委托卡尔·E·克鲁姆公司制造了一台定制原型机。在研发过程中，他背负了巨额债务，最终未能将打字机商业化。1948 年，默根塔勒·林诺打字机公司从林德森手中买下了这款打字机的专利权。该公司也收购了那台原型机，据说后来将其丢弃了。

Time for reintroductions. I have been a janitor on the #fedi for a couple of years, mopping floors, plumbing toilets, fixing intercoms. That kind of work. While satisfying in itself, it is unpaid and looked down upon, unthankful work.

Kinda weird hearing about Threads devs talking at Fediverse House considering that they promised full federation by the end of 2024 and we're almost through the first quarter of 2025 and we don't seem any closer to that promise.

Evidently, I ruffled some feathers of a certain sort of people on a "Quiet Public" discussion by saying something that's not even that crazy.
They're reporting me en masse, even reporting posts that are completely unrelated to that discussion. They're seething because they can't accept that not everyone is going to have the same opinion on the Fediverse.
They want an echo chamber. Don't let them have it. Stand for digital freedom.

I just spoke with a #US #Senator office about the #fediverse . They're asking for more information to help spread around #Capital #Hill in small bite sized easy to understand pieces. I'm obviously going to give them @elena beautiful #movie on the #fedi (with some light editing which she's agreed to).
I'll of course show them https://fediverse.info/ and https://fedi.tips/ which are great websites. I figured I'd give them examples of amazing #AP projects such as #mastodon , #pixelfed , #peertube , #bandwagon , and #bonfire ; even things like @admin .
I'd love to know from folks any EASY to understand projects that best encompass the Fediverse and explanations of it.
What are some projects you'd hand to your friends and family that would explain and display to them what we are?
I'll say this isn't going to happen over night. There's lot of questions around regulations, trust & safety, etc. But I feel it's pertinent to at least get the conversation going, especially considering the current state of disdain for big social media and the impending legislation around these things.
I'll finally state if there's anyone in this list that does NOT want to be involved with this, that's totally fine and I understand and I can exclude you from the materials I give to them.

new release of #Fedialgo, the customizable timeline algorithm / filtering system for your Mastodon feed, counts the number of times each hashtag appears in your timeline even if people don't use a "#" character to give you a better sense of what people are talking about in the Fediverse.
there's a little bit of art vs. science here because some strings are disqualified from this kind of counting (e.g. a word like "the" should not be counted even if some maniac decided to make it a hashtag) so let me know if you see any weirdly high counts.

Here is a preview design for a (business) card promoting the Fediverse (made in Inkscape).
I plagiarized the idea from @juergen_hubert who has created card templates people can print and give out at protests.
Instead, i'm doing fully designed cards for more generic use. Lending my graphic design skills to the community. I will put these out as print ready files under a (non-commercial) Creative Commons license - so anyone can get a stack cheaply printed themselves to give out places or leave in coffee shops etc.
If there is interest, I will do a bunch of different designs, different languages, and a US size (I'm designing to EU standards). Plus maybe some stickers and posters too?
This particular design is my trademark 'busy with movement' style. I've based the design on the colours and shapes from the official Fediverse logo.
