Yesterday I hit the Kickstarter launch button for my literary fantasy novel Widdershins and felt like Kára’s story had taken flight yet again. This jubilant unknown drove the of writing the novel; I had no idea initially how high she was flying—what full, Beltane moonlight guided her.In 13 minutes the campaign was fully funded. I’m amazed. Five stars:Stay For A Spell by Amy Coombe with Lottie Bourne (Narrator) (2026) is a cozy fantasy that plays with the notion of curses in a way I haven't seen since Harriet the Invincible by Ursula Vernon (who now writes as T. Kingfisher). Princess Tanadelle of the Widdenmar has settled into a life of performing all the royal duties that the rest of her family are too busy to do. It means a lot of travel, a very tight schedule, and almost no downtime, save for the long hours in the carriage. Five stars:Witch Hat Atelier, Vol. 1 by Kamome Shirahama and Stephen Kohler (translator) (2017) has been popping up in my recommendations for a year or two on various sites where I track my reading. Now that the manga is getting an anime adaptation, I felt it was time to give the series a read.Coco, a young seamstress has wanted to be a witch for most of her short life. As a young child she purchased a magic coloring book from a witch with a spiral eyeball mask and was given a free magic wand. Life and Death lay asleep in a the grass, the way they lay slightly resembling the yin-yang symbol. The tools of their trades are scattered around them.

Life is a woman with black hair, in a white robe. Behind her are the paint brush and palette she paints the universe with. She's rather short and has rosy cheeks.

Death is a skeleton in a black robe, which appears to be continually disintegrating at the hem line. Behind him lay his scythe and scroll of names.

Between Life and Death is the hourglass that serves as the source of time for the entire universe, an item that's most commonly carried by Death, but which is part of the work of both of them.

The artwork is cartoonish, with some bushes and a tree that has one red piece of fruit dangling from it. The scene is looked upon by the sun, which frowns at everything.

(Right) The background is an image of some green bacteria with the following quote over the top:

"I think I'll call it Ted."

"Ted? You want to name micro-organism Ted? Are you serious?"
