The realm of science isn't the only dubious one this month. Take a gander at the latest issue of #Fantasy and #ScienceFiction to see what I mean…

https://galacticjourney.org/july-20-1970-the-goat-without-horns-among-other-things-august-1970-fantasy-and-science-fiction/

$Cover of The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction's August issue, featuring 'The Goat Without Horns' by Thomas Burnett Swann and 'Isaac Asimov on astrology'-- the cover illustration is a black-haired nude white woman facing away from the viewer, standing thigh-deep in a claret sea and peering downward. Three improbably large & erect black dorsal fins tightly orbit her, cutting a circular wake, and an onyx platform floats above, out of her reach. Three crescent moons hang large in the sky, the largest one refracted through the only other feature projecting from the waves-- left of the woman is an enormous lenticular crystal within which is embedded vertically a chalky nude man, twisted to face the moon. Red and white flares lay a track of parabolic arcs charting from the horizon towards the crystal.$

I mean it does make a certain kind of sense, an evil facist wouldn't consider happy people civilized 🤔

The kind of people who don't let cause strife both for themselves and others in the name of ambition have no use to a Dark Lord 😁

James Hogg & Mikhail Bulgakov

In the latest London Review of Books podcast, Marina Warner & Adam Thirlwell look at how James Hogg’s JUSTIFIED SINNER & Bulgakov’s THE MASTER & MARGARITA represent fanaticism, be it Calvinism or Bolshevism, & consider why both writers used the fantastical to test reality

I've finished: The Book of Love by Kelly Link

What if one of those stupid YA scary movies about a bunch of teens finding an ancient artifact and waking an eldritch horror, was turned into an in depth slow-paced masterpiece.

Kelly Link spends so much time with each of the characters, we learn to know them and love them as people with their admirable and their annoying traits.

We see them through their own eyes and through the eyes of others.

We see them grow and make their own choices despite all of the magical interference.

Ebook and paperback: https://books2read.com/TrollSong

Having an abusive assassin for a sister was bad enough, but when Lyra’s older sister, Nicole, becomes obsessed with killing the teenage troll, her life becomes a special kind of nightmare. Will she escape, or become just another victim of the unstoppable woman?

(Left) The cover of Troll Song, by Owen Tyme, Illustrated by Ryan Johnson.

There's a woman in mud spattered white, leather armor crossing a pair of short swords against the neck of a terrified, shirtless dwarf.

The woman has white hair and a darker skin tone on the left side of her face. Her left eye is green and her right eye is blue.

The dwarf's hair and beard are blond.

The background is a green forest, with some flowers among the tall grass.

(Right) The background is a snow-covered forest, with a pair of dark silhouettes in it, one small and the other large, like a giant. The smaller silhouette is of a young woman walking away and the interior is filled with musical symbols, in green, white and two shades of blue. The larger silhouette is a woman wielding two swords and the interior is full of blood spatter. The larger one appears to be chasing the smaller one.

The following text is laid over the scene:

“I can’t die until Lyra takes her last breath! She’ll regret betraying her sisters!”

“There’s no price I won’t pay to see that happen, no pain I won’t endure and I’d sacrifice the whole world to seal her fate!”

Did a speedpaint of a zebra! Clocked this one at about 45 or 50 mins.

digital illustration of an anthropomorphic zebra, wearing gladiatorial fantasy armor and holding a sword, kneeling on a wooden log in the middle of a field while looking towards the camera. The armour is quite simle/not ornate, and has some black studs on it. The sword that's being held mounted on their right shoulder also appears to be very plain. The tail and a torn cape are flowing with the wind.

The 3rd & final Lady & Lord Riven novella, A Waltz of Sinister Import, will be out everywhere in just 10 days, so this week's Sunday snippet is from novella #2, A Honeymoon of Grave Consequence. Catch up before the finale arrives! :)

Grab it in ebook or paperback now:

https://books2read.com/honeymoonGrave

#romance #fantasy

The illustrated cover for A Honeymoon of Grave Consequence, by Stephanie Burgis, shows the silhouette of an elegant traveling carriage over the title and a bat with wings outstretched underneath, all of it framed by apples and with mirrors at the top and the bottom of the image. Above and beside the cover is this snippet of text:
A scorching kiss against the sensitive nape of her bare neck made her gasp and instinctively arch her back against him, and his voice deepened into a low rumble against her skin. “My dear, you may never care for small talk, but when you talk about your passions, you glow.”
“Now you’re being absurd.” Her words were breathless. The scene in the mirror before her—her mouth opening in a soundless moan, her body arching tautly against what appeared to be nothing but air behind her, even as physical sensation overwhelmed her—was so fantastical that it felt dreamlike, as if she really were being ravished by an invisible spirit...or merely imagining this whole vivid experience.
But her husband’s hands were solid and real as they slid down her back to curve around her waist, and his breath caressed her skin as he worked his way around the base of her neck. “Just look at yourself now,” he murmured. “See the woman I see.”

I've finished: Gund of the Dawn by Adrian Tchaikovsky

At this point I'd read anything by Tchaikovsky. But Guns of the Dawn is the Tchaikovsky novel most likely to disappoint his fans.

It is mostly British nobles tying themselves up in knots pride and prejudice style. I get frustrated and just want to slap them and yell and them to snap out of it and allow themselves to be happy.

Strange animals are hinted at but never explored. There is combat, but I found the portrayal of musket combat to be lacking. Muskets in a swamp, and checking if the powder is dry is mentioned only when back home in "England". No bayonets? Most shots are accurate and fatal. It seems that narrative necessity overruled Tchaikovsky's usual diligent portrayal of weapons and combat. (See shadow of the apt).

However, the characters are compelling, and the anti war sentiment is pervasive and I appreciate it very much.

Despite its flaws, it is a good novel and I read it from start to finish without switching to other works. It was a grate companion during a stressful week when I found it hard to give all my attention to the audiobook.

Emma Newman was a great choice as narrator.
