$A Brilliant Story in Absurdist Flavor by Billy101 Friday, July 3rd, 2026 20:04 First of all, this story challenged my brain. It requires a slow read to appreciate the wit and clever humor. It has a distinct voice that uses play on words and Overall mundane absurdity to tell a story that’s actually cosmic horror. I'm honestly impressed with the author's skill in weaving a complex story that I think in many ways is a satire of social systems, which is the part that sometimes makes me stop and say “Oh wow, that is deep. And chilling.” like the imprisonment of philo—oh | don't want to spoil. Some comments: Sometimes the multiple inner voices / fractured psyche can be overwhelming, especially since the two protagonists share the same quirk. Though it’s funny. I feel like there's a deeper reason why they do. Another is that the story sometimes unfold through the characters not doing anything much physically (or maybe it's because they are philosophers). The humor is great, but I think there are times when it undercuts the impactful beats instead of letting them linger a little longer. There are also some tense slips and minor missing punctuations. Overall, it's very entertaining. Perfect for warming up my rusty brain since I'm just starting to read again. I think I will read this again in my free time because the voice is just so entertaining. But make no mistake, the worldbuilding is solid, and the plot is not what you see coming. I think this is actually a diamond in the rough. Excited to read book 2!$

<p>More <a href="/tags/fantasy/" rel="tag">#fantasy</a> ! It's fair to say I enjoyed Martha Well's Witch King much more than Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, though it is probably also indicative of the development of the genre in the last 20 years. It was surprisingly and pleasantly different from both Well's prior Murderbot Diaries and a lot of standard fantasy fare. Major spoilers ahead ⚠️

<p>The scene in the control room of Castrima is one of the best scenes I've ever read in SFF. I don't have the words to properly explain the sense of awe and dread it evokes in me. This is the moment when everything Alabastar has been telling Essun finally becomes real to her—and, by extension, to us.</p><p>The plinth with dark metal shards; iron, like the core of the Earth, flecked with some rust. Ancient warnings that label the shards as the enemy. Then Tonkee grabs one, and it attacks her. Burrows into her flesh, swims up an artery toward her sessapinae. Essun makes contact with the thing using her orogeny and senses hate and anger and a presence that speaks into her mind:</p><p>Hello, little enemy.</p><p>Gods, can you imagine? Your people accidentally fling the Moon away from the Earth, setting into motion a cataclysm that will kill your civilization and set your species back thousands of years in development. And as if that's not bad enough, you suddenly discover that the planet you live on is alive and angry and it hates you for what you've done. That it will work for ages to exterminate you all.</p><p>The curses that have peppered this story thus far—"rusting" and "Evil Earth"—take on a different feel after this scene. We know now why the people of the Stillness use these words as curses, even though they've long forgotten the real reasons.</p><p>Absolutely brilliant worldbuilding here.
